MK4 1.4 polo - troubled start

Post by tomk »

Hello, I'm new on here so hopefully this is in the right section! sorry if not.
Basically my 1999 1.4 polo has developed a starting issue, I've replaced plugs, rotor arm, Dissy cap, air filter etc. (will do the fuel filter when I have time)

It only won't start when its cold, I've managed to force start it by turning the key and covering the throttle body which seems to trick it! (pancake off) - also sprayed the throttle body Wd40.
once its started don't seem to have a problem, but leave it over night and the problems back (obviously engine cold). I did notice today that it seems to be drinking a little more fuel, but could be just my imagination!

Also it seem to take a few seconds for the engine revs to settle back to tick over, even when warm.
Any ideas? automatic choke?

Many thanks

Thanks for the reply mrb20vt,

If it was the throttle body surly I'd have trouble starting when hot as well? Its only when the engine is cold.

What's the cost of a new throttle body?

Hay ho solved the problem - temp sensor!
To everyone having running, starting, tick over problems I recommend just disconnecting the temp sensor, costs you nothing and can be ruled out quickly!

Surprised its not in the common problems page with a quick fix solution. And yes did use search!
