Polo 6n2 1.4 16v - My First Car

Hi, I'm new to this forum after purchasing an X reg (2000) Polo 1.4 16V S for £1250 with 88K on the clock and is in excellent condition for ages minus a few small stone chips which is expected of a 12 years old car. As an 18 year old I am very pleased with the car as it comes with a lot of features such as electric windows, alloys, fogs, air con, four disc brakes etc. which don't feature on a 1998 Fiesta Zetec 1.2 which was what I was looking at getting after sharing my sister's for a year after passing my test. After looking at insurance prices I discovered I could insure a 2000 1.4 16v Polo for the same price as a 1998 1.2 Fiesta so I decided to spend a little more buying the Polo which comes better equipped and is much much faster than the fiesta.

Here are a few pictures of my pride and joy (Sorry if there a bit blurry but they're taken from the dealers site) but it gives you a good idea of what it's like.








I’ve got a few questions I was wondering if any owners could help me out on.

1) Although the car is in a good condition the glove box doesn't open and it isn't locked; it just won't open. I am thinking of picking one up from the scrapyard but before I do I thought I would ask if anyone has a solution to this problem without causing damage.

2) What mods would people suggest? Personally I don't want to go over the top but I am thinking of doing a few little things to make it more eye catching and unique.

3) This is going to sound like a stupid question but does anyone know how to clean the inside of the front lights as they are slightly dirty but I don't want to buy new ones, it's nothing major but would be nice to have clean ones.

i havnt done this myself but im pretty sure the only way to open the headlight is to put it in the oven then prise the lens off once the glue has softend

like i said i am not 100% but i dont think they comepart except where the lens is glued on

Thanks for the advise but I think I will stick to having slightly dirty ones rather than putting them at risk in the oven and then potentially having to buy new ones as there not that bad and I've seen a lot worse.

I've got another question for you guys.

I was just wondering if you can tell me the bhp of my car as I have checked the engine code and it is stating that my car has an AUB engine. Would that mean it is 75bhp or 100bhp?

Remove the rear wiper, and fit a 25mm grommet
Paint the callipers red/what ever colour
GTI Grill
Led lights, (number plates, boot light, interior lights)

Thanks, I would say that I'm extremely lucky to have a 1.4 16v at 18. I've checked the engine code and it is saying it has an AUB engine, am I right in thinking it is 100bhp

I have been working hard and saving up for years so I could own a car and as I am good with money (Don't just spend it on nonsense like other teenagers) I thought I would treat myself to a nice, and rather fast car.

The insurance cost £1305 which is very cheap. It is only that low as I put my mum and sister on the policy as named drivers as they will occasionally be driving the car. I am the policyholder though so if they crash it then it is my No Claims Bonus gone.

I terms of mods I think I might one day paint the callipers blue as I am lucky to have have four disc brakes as standard whereas most have two discs and two drums. The blue will go with the Lego dust caps I made using this tutorial https://www.youtube*.com/watch?v=1xI_J_pp-mQ. I know the caps will get nicked but they are only made from a lego brick and black plastic cap so it doesn't matter as they are easy and cheap the make; although I did cut myself a few times

To be honest I am not really a fan of the GTI grill yet although people's taste changes through time so we will see what happens.

Easy, Effective and lets you put keyless door handles on (More Modern I think)

AUB is indeed the 100bhp engine - I had one too, albeit in a Fabia at 17! Made a better noise than my GTI engine does too IMO, although the throttle response wasn't all that urgent! I remember having to think about using the throttle about a second or two before going near the clutch it was that bad!

Other things to watch for one this engine include highish oil usage from damaged piston rings. If it's been driven slowly all its life you can find that carbon deposits start to damage the rings. I think mine did 1litre per 1,000 miles or so, which is actually worse than my RX-8 was which burns oil by design! It's also meant to be worth cleaning the crank-case breather, but access is tricky so I never bothered! If you can, removing and cleaning the EGR valve isn't a bad shout either.

Insurance quote isn't too bad at all! I can rememember the 100bhp ones being horrid to insure at the time, so I got the same engine in a Fabia instead, much cheaper to insure. If it's motivating at all, I'm paying around that on my two cars now, and I'm only 3 years older than you, it will fall quickly.

In terms of mods, I still think the one thing letting down the back off all 6n/6n2s is the lack of a rear spoiler - it just looks odd without one compared to the GTI.

I've never used one, but have seen good words about the R-Click stuff. I'm sure if you go on club polo there'd be a guide. A forum with a lot more activity/technical knowledge at times, but also largely full of douches! It's a site I'll search, but not post on!

Cool, I guess I'm lucky as I've heard that they are quite rare as the majority of 1.4 16v are 75bhp. Some say that they are even rarer than the GTI , but then again a lot of people make their Polo's look like a GTI despite owning a 1.0, 1.4, etc. even though it's not a GTI . Perhaps it just looks like there are more on the road.

The sticker on the cambelt cover. The number is AUB0010940. In fact I just had the cambelt changed and was quoted at over £300 at a local VW Dealership but I found a garage that done it for just under £200


I also thought I would post a picture of the sticker in the boot. You can just about see the engine code stated as AUB


I'm not really bothered if it is not a 100bhp version but it would be nice especially at the age of 18
