6n2 1.4 16v To GTi conversion help

Hi All,

Long time reader, First time poster. Hope people can help me out.

Car:

1.4 16v 75HP AUA 2001 6n2.

I have used search, FAQs, and google. I may have misses some posts... If I have then I apologise.

My AUA engine is not very well... Smoking, intermittent judder... Just not well. Think it's the piston rings.

I was going to get another AUA engine. And swap them over... I've found a garage that'll do the work for a very reasonable price.

But then I got thinking... Why not just go for the Gti engine. And gain 50HP!
Again, the garage has offered a very reasonable price even for the added work. To do the loom / ecu work and such to add Gti engine.

What will be required for the conversion?


1: Engine
2: Gearbox ?? Can I not use mine?
3: Wiring loom
4: ECU / Keys
5: Clocks – Do I NEED Them?


Other:

Fuse box?
Can I use my pedals and such... I have the ecu controlled throttle body at the moment (No wires)
Do I need to change anything like fuel pump?
Can I use the same exhaust manifold? / same gearbox / same clutch...

I just basically need to know EVERYTHING required to change over the engine.

So I can buy it all then get it all shipped direct to the garage and let them do surgery to the cars brain and heart.

Again, I really do appreciate anyone who can help.

It has a different gearbox and clutch for a start

A completely different wiring loom

Different pedal box with additional switches/senders

Fuel pump is different to cope with a higher demand

It has different brakes plus rear discs

Driveshafts are much larger

ARB is thicker

Clocks you would need as really need to match the engine to the clocks

Really you need a crashed GTI to transplant


Also bear in mind the implication an engine change like this will have on your insurance. Not declaring it could result in the DVLA scrapping the car as it won't be appropriately taxed,MOTd or insured.

That's fine... like I say I want to know EVERYTHING needed for the conversion.

So I'll need:

1: Engine / Gearbox / Clutch
2: Wiring looms
3: Driveshafts
4: Pedal box - switches/senders (Will the pedal box be required? As I have the throttle body sensor one not wire. I understand if I need to change just the switches / sensors.)
5: Fuel Pump
6: Clocks, Keys, ECU


Brakes - I have front and rear breaks discs all round on my CC I'm sure they're powerful enough for a GTi upgrade.
ARB - Why can I not just keep mine?
Gearbox - I've heard that the gearbox from all 6N / 6N2 should fit any 6N / 6N2 Engines

Insurance will know, I ALWAYS declare every mod... What's the point of not declaring? Just paying for void insurance otherwise... And I'll also inform DVLA.

The GTI gearbox is completely different to all other models, plus it had a 200mm clutch whereas all others are 175mm or 190mm

It has completely different ratios and also has EDL (electronic differential lock)

ARB on the GTI is larger as are the front discs. If I was doing it, I would change it

Sorry, Don't want to spam to much...

But what about a AUB onversion. (100HP)

Would that be a direct bolt on along with my ecu and such? Also would my Ancillaries be swapable?

It seems the main difference are:

Eveything else is the same... so can i just get a AUB And slap it in my car? On my current ECU? and clocks and such?

The only real problem i see is this "valve timing matched to camshafts " I assume this will be mechanical based and NOT computer? As i'm sure it doesnt have VVT like the GTi.

I guess the engine / manifold down pipe and job done?

AUB conversion...

Youll need the ECU to match the engine for a start

Apart from that, you should be able to just replace the block in its entirety and use your existing gearbox and clocks etc.

AUBs often have aircon, so youll need to remove the pump and use a shorter belt if your current doesnt.

It doesnt have VVT to clear that up.

I do appreciate your help thus far.

I don't have air conditioning on my current car.

What belt would i need to get then? Would all my bits fit in the AUB then? HT, coil pack, drive belts (Only had them done about 3 ish months back), Alternator...

And what about the loom.. I take it that'll be the same as my AUA? like the connector and such...

So i guess i just need ECU / Key and find out what aux belt i'll need?

Only thing is the barrel... can i put the key / transponder by the AUB ecu?

The belt from your existing may fit, though youll obviously need to ensure the AC pump isnt fitted to the new engine.

Loom should be the same, though there may be a few extra plugs (highly unlikely mind you)

The immobiliser ECU and the engine ECU are different, so your existing key may work but in any case you could if needed use the matching immobiliser and swap the key transponder as long as you can get it out without snapping it!
