You need to turn the white screw you see anti clockwise, then pull the unit out, it's a bit fiddily but just take your time. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DROP THE SCREW THOUGH, ITS A B**CH TO RETRIEVE! :x

Is this just the same method of fixing used on previous Polo's - ie a tethered large plastic nut with a steel threaded insert, being screwed on to a captive steel bolt on the light cluster? If so, what can happen is, the seal slips down and lets water onto the steel captive bolt and rusts it solid to the large tethered plastic nut with the steel threaded insert. Now to remove that requires a lot of force - enough force to get it to unscrew or for the captive bolt to rotate within the light cluster and then it can be forced off if the threaded insert also comes free in the large plastic nut. Recovery action being - separate the nut from bolt, clean up all rust, re-fix captive to light cluster and fix in place using epoxy glue, then sort out the seal issue, apply grease to the bolt and refit the cluster. Remember, if you do find any traces of rust on this fixing bolt, don't ignore it as cleaning it, sorting seal issue and greasing it will keep it working for the future.

Hopefully just a bit more effort is needed to remove your one.

i ended up using a sharp knife to cut the trim a bit more to get my hand in, and a pair of pipe grips on it. its a plastic bolt.
