I own a 1.4 8v 6n2 polo match .. during the small amount of time i have owned this car, it has become quickly apparent how unreliable the high mileage ones are ..
Mine has just over 150,000 miles started life off as an instructors car . now the problem i have left which happens to be the same one i cannot solve as yet; problem started life as an occasional misfire on idle @ cylinder #4 now it has random multiple misfires and i'd like to sort it out .
so far work done to eradicate this problem:
>new plugs
>leads
>coil pack
>coolant temp sensor
>filters
>oil
>lambda sensor bank 1 circuit b
>resealed inlet and throttle body using old seals with gasket compound
>tried cleaning the maf sensor
now the most recent is that of the maf sensor... i had the engine running on idle whilst i carefully removed the maf sensor clip and wiring which resulted in absoloutely no change (still misfired on idle).
the car seems to have most of the power it once had and i have also done a compression test on all 4 cylinders ranging in pressure from 100-165psi across the 4 cylinders, lowest of which being cylinder no.4 (the one i think im having trouble with).
so far the only conclusion i may come to is to replace the maf sensor, but am i gaurenteed for that to fix it or is there any other suggestions?
Thanks for any advice,
Richard

Have you scanned it with vagcom/VCDS?
ECU is unlikely to be the cause of the problem

yes amongst other thigns i have scanned it with a normal obd2 reader/clearer and get cylinder no 4 misfire and sometimes random multiple misfires . but it only ever comes on either at low revs or idle or slowing down mainly just on idle. although sometimes the engine will literally cut out on me. would it be better to scan with a vag reader? i have one btu the software is being troublesome

Download VCDS lite free of charge from the Rosstech website. Ensure the baud rate in settings is set to 9600, and the COM port in device manager is also set to the same.
That should work fine and is legitimate.
