How many positions are on your ignition?
is it just the 1 then ignition or is it 2 (power,coil,ign)?
mines just the one.

OFF - ON - STARTER
How many others do you need?
(i have my radio connected to the permanent power line, w00t..... i hate cars where you need the key in to run the stereo! just got to sort out a bypass switch to override the lights going off (with a buzzer, natch) too, for those night-time coasting moments
)
never forget to turn the radio off tho - the polo's skin is thin enough that you can tell its still on when you're outside!

You can cheat and get round not having an accessory function. Its not great tho (will kill ur battery) Steve milo was showing ppl at inters. If u set ur lights to full on the switch, then pull back the stalk for main beam, then put ur wipers on occasional swipe, the rest of the electrics in the car will work (fan, ciggie lighter, radio etc.)

yeah, i found that out soon after i got the car..... wierd how that works, i wonder why! is it designed in, or just a short-circuit fault?
havent yet figured out what it's useful for though, apart from showing off "hey look at this wierd thing my car does", unless your key breaks in winter and you need to run the heater til the engine heat's gone....
hmmmm i wonder if it keeps the ignition working too! bit hard to hold both of those on and turn the key to OFF tho, would need a 3rd hand.
(alternately, put key in, undo steering lock, then roll down hill and try to bump start... there's still the little problem of needing an extra limb to steer with...)

Maybe it's for the parking light?
Instead of turning the lights on, try just leaving one indicator on when you turn the ignition off, and see if that works. If it does then I think it's probably just a side effect of the 'parking light' feature.

It was just a thought.
The parking light is the only contact in the ignition switch that is connected when the ignition is set to 'off'. When you turn on a parking light, it feeds power through the ignition switch into the lighting circuit, instead of directly through the fusebox like the main headlamp switch.
If it had worked with just the parking light on, that would've meant less of a drain on your battery when you were using power without the engine running.
