me personally I would get a 1.4tdi gives you the best of both worlds even if you are doing low mileage I have had one since new and have 112k on it all I have had to do is service it replace the timing belt and one set of pads and it is now on its second set of tyres. It has cost pennies overall in the last nine years plus there are a few special editions that will give you the air con electric windows etc

Dont get a 1.2 unless you like changing ignition coils.

I wouldn't spend 5K on one either (personal choice though - I'm too old skool for this bit of the forum - My daily's a '95 passat TDI ... I'd spend the 5K on a VERY good mk2 golf/corrado/something like that - especially only doing 6K a year - you wouldn't be racking big mileage onto a classic car)

BUT if it HAD to be a 9n, it'd be the highest spec, (realistically, TDi sport) best maintained example I could find in budget.

Mrs Fonzooorooo's coming round to my logic - she's had her poverty spec 1.2 9n (the reason I'm on here) from new, and the plan is to replace it with a mk2 or 'rado.

What car would you recommend him to buy for 5k then?
what car would i recommend him to buy? well for starters, I would like to repeat what i said earlier, this is my opinion so I dont want to offend anyone. 5k is alot of money, why spend it on a 9n?! think outside the box, get something more desirable and premium, have a look at facelifted alfa 147's, you can get them in either petrol or diesel with full leather and cruise control for under 5k. if you can stretch get an alfa GT. Please dont give me the whole "reliability" talk, because my brother has a diesel GT, and its been faultless for the 2 years he has owned it and with an lsd the car handles like its on rails. If you dont particularly like alfas and assuming that you're over 20, have you looked at bmw e46 318/320ci coupes/verts? plenty going round for under 5k, especially in sport trims with full leather and some toys included and they look amazing. I am aware that it the fuel economy between a polo 1.4 and a a 2.0 bmw will be worlds apart, but you will have soooo much fun. its just a suggestion, obviously end of the day, its you're money and you're call.

I have a 1.4 tdi....i wouldnt swap it for a lambo!

Its made from the same stuff as the 1.9's but with 3 cylinders therfore its bulletproof and ultra reliable
Mine has done 123k miles and sounds, pulls and looks like its done 50k.

It is very economical, if u find them a bit underpowered you can always get a remap to around 100bhp depending on which model you bought in the first place

soo...ecnocomical, just right for the car, cheap insurance, cheap tax..what more do you want!
