Golf mk4 GTI steering wheel into 6n2 GTI

Post by brosh »

Hello,

I want to buy a Golf mk4 GTI steering wheel (leather, 3-spoke) and fit it into my 6n2 GTI.

Is it a straight fit or do I need to adapt anything?
Thanks.

The airbag slip rings are quite different - will require some modifying to say the least.

Really? I was pretty sure it's a straight fit.

What would I need to change?

Is there a steering wheel that fits right in?

Thanks!

I beleive so.

Spline wise its the same, but from what Ive been told the mk4 uses a different slip ring design so it has to be modified to suit

Mk3 golf ones usually fit straight in

Mk5 golf ones can be fitted with a modded mk4 golf slip ring.

Biggest hurdle youll have is the slipring

Ok, and modifying it means what, cutting plastic? welding electric wires?

I'm trying to understand if I'm up for the job.

Drilling, soldering, cutting as a minimum.

Having never done it, Im not sure of the process, but a few on here have so best to wait and see if they reply.

You should be able to fit a mk4 wheel by using your slip ring, you will just need to drill the wheel to attach your slip ring on (different fixing holes).

You literally posted 2 mins before I was going to post.
I asked a friend who did the same thing with his Golf Mk3 and he said the exact same thing - just need to drill 3 holes in the steering wheel.

In the next week or 2 I will be doing this and I'll upload the pictures.

Thank you all very much for your help.

BTW,
The steering wheel my friend fitted was an Golf MK4 R32 one, amazing looking and impossible to find :)

Not impossible so many go on eBay just for a lot of money. Mate just bought one £200 worth the money though ;)

WOW!
For that kind of money, add some more and get the MK6 GTI one :)

200 included airbag too. It feels so much sturdier than the mk6 gti one if you've held an r32 wheel you'd know what I mean. Just so chunky it feels powerful before you've even moved haha

I'd prefer the r32 personally feel it compliments a 6n2 dash better personal opinion though man :)
