Fuel smell inside

Hi guys, when the car is warm and I stop at a junction I get the smell of fuel fumes in the cabin. So far I've changed the fuel filter, jet washed the rear O/S wheel arch and filler/breather pipe, changed the pre cat lambda and wiring (as it was running really rich) and checked front to back for leaks of which there is none as far as I can see. I don't think it's losing fuel as I'm getting 41mpg. Any ideas or has anyone else had this?

Check your crankcase breather hose is connected to the airbox

If you have a bmc or other air filter instead, make sure you have piped the crankcase hose away from its normal place to down under the drivers headlight with a little filter on it.

Pipe is to the left at the back

I had this on my old one when the cambelt had been done and they hadnt reconnected the pipe

You should be able to smell it when idling

Cheers Alex, I'll get it apart tomorrow, I'm not suffering fuel smells this week, the wife has had an op on her arm so I've got my Mk5 golf back for a couple of weeks

Got this same issue on my car, when i had the car on the ramps this week, i looked up in to the engine to see that pipe from the crank case to the airbox was fitted with a filter on it. I could see oil on the side of it suggesting its leaking.

Going to call TPS to get a new genuine breather pipe to replace it and hopefully the car should be ok from there.

Thats not a filter as such

Thats a PCV which converts oil into vapour to stop it spewing litres of oil through the crankcase breather.

Are you on a standard airbox?

It comes as the whole unit if you get the OEM pipe with the PCV included, problem is its around £50! Needless to say I split the knackered bit off the top of the PCV and ran a length of replacement pipe to the front of the car as it didn't have a 90degree to go neatly into the air box. This did solve the fuel smell though so result!

£50, im happy to pay that, i want my engine using OEM parts, and to be as stock as possible. I dont know why people fanny around with these engines, causing owners down the line further issues, LEAVE IT BE. Want a faster car by a fast car, lol.

Anyway rant over, i should be able to get that part cheaper from TPS, have a few contacts in there.

I totally agree with OEM, my car is completely original down to the yellow looking side lights

I just couldn't justify 50 sheets for the pipe when it needs taxing.......

ok let me correct myself, most things need or should be left alone.

I used to have a BMC induction kits on there, took that straight off and sold it and replaced with standard air box with a K&N Pannel Filter, my side lights are not the yellow ones, that would annoy the s**t out of me so they been changed, done rear light bulbs on number plate to white ones, so generally speaking its more of a freshen up opposed to screwing an engine which in this case should be left alone.

I do run a BMC air filter. Power wise, it probably gives a little gain, but it does cost me more in fuel but hey I like the sound! I have contemplated refitting the factory airbox, so at some point I may go down the same route as you

I agree - freshening and modernising, but messing isnt a good thing.

dont get me wrong, i did like it when i first got the car as it was part of the sale, however i then started thinking it cant be good for the engine due to the location but hey i might be wrong. After going back to stock air box and K&N panel filter i personally felt the car ran allot smoother plus the fact that i did all the timing system inc water pump using genuine bits.

Just need to sort this breather pipe issue and i should be good from there.
