Disc brakes

Post by Rik762 »

I picked up my new 1.4 Match yesterday and noticed that it had rear discs, not drums. I'm sure the one in the showroom was not all disc.
Am I dreaming?

The 1.2 petrols and the 1.2 TDI have drums, the 1.4, 1.2 TSI, 1.6 TDI, GTI and Blue GT all have rear discs.

I thought it was all SEL, GTI, R-Line and BlueGT's that came with rear discs, all other spec came with drums, maybe you go lucky and they ran out of drums that day ;)

I don't think that they would run out of drums - it was made in Africa.

Well just to throw in the mix, the wife has an SEL and its a 1.4 and it has drums ?

Is a 3 door with DSG though (if that makes a difference) ?

Right, well VW do like to confuse us lot, I remember reading on the 9N3 forum that any Polo with 100PS or more got rear discs. So I'm gonna take a guess and saying that anything with 90PS or more gets rear discs? Except from a very lucky Rik762.

The Polo pricelist (with the full specification in it) says 'Disc brakes, front and rear (1.4 85 PS models only)' under the Match section. They're not mentioned again apart from for the BlueGT, which I presume is because it's spec is listed 'above S A/C', rather than above the SEL (weird, I know).

What we need now is for any new owners in Match / SEL area to report in. I asked my dealer and he reported that they have just started fitting discs to the rear of several lower powered models.

When I first started looking at 6R's with the positive aim of ordering one
It looked like a lucky dip for drum's or disc's on the rear of 3 or 5 door Polo's

Having had disc's all round on a lighter weight vehicle before I wanted them next time around
but ordering a new 1.4 petrol manual SEL five door, it just wasn't going to come with them

On a diesel yes, but not on a petrol and the SEL's that I have seen since have been the same ~ so far
I would guess that this follows the same route for the Match

The rear disc's on my previous Audi rusted very quickly from the limited use from the front/rear brake bias
and then lightly scored themselves away when you did give them some speed to slow down

The good news is that I now spend half the time cleaning the brake dust off before waxing my wheels

They're not putting them on any 1.2's, I think this is part of the 2013MY changes, like the S getting the RCD310 with 6 speakers and an AUX input. Image
