New member needing advice

Hi Guys,

Luke Harte here just joined today as I'm looking to buy this car hopefully tomorrow: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/ ... 06/1057636

I'm just wondering if you have any advice on things I should look for on the car etc... Hopefully the car will be fine as the owner works for VW but I just like to have a little more knowledge going into the sale.

Hello and welcome!

That's a nice find, although one of the (very few) issues with 2006 GTI's is the 1st/2nd gear syncro can go, and a symptom of this is crunching first and second gear when accelerating hard, but being a vw tech he should have had it sorted long ago if it were an issue.

Obviously got some really good mods on and should go like stink! The test drive will reveal all. I doubt that you'll be disappointed.

lot of miles on that polo you should buy mine its on pistonheads aswell

Its not lots of miles, ive had mine since 50k and have done a fair few since! If it has been looked after there should be no issues at all. After all there are passat 1.8t engined cars with well over 200k

My main issues would be:

-Make sure he has been changing oil regularly, this engine is prone to the sump take up point etting clogged.
-As said the Gearbox check 2nd gear and also 3rd.
-Also check to make sure it has had front Wishbone bushes changed.
-When was timing belt changed?
-Also when on a test drive make sure it isnt surging or loosing boost pressure, use the boost guage he has to check this.

about average mileage for its age, as long as its got decent history id not be put off.

however, it doesnt have £2k of mods on it so dont be afraid to barter him down

Really appreciate all the posts guys.

The boy knew his car inside out and the garage that he works at is the one I'll be taking the car to as i've decided to buy it The car was super clean but will go see it again in the day light before i hand over the money.

Everything felt good on the test drive and I got him right down on the price and also got all the spear parts chucked it along with original wheels with good tread, ebs groved drilled rear discs and green stuff break pads all brand new also the exhaust etc... so i'm happy with the result. I think i'm going to need to turn down the boost in 1st and 2nd as you just can put down the power. Does anyone have any preference on boost controllers?

Congrats. Im sure youll enjoy it. One tip though, bin those greenstuff pads.

Best boost controller is the apexi avcr. Has gear selectable boost settings amongst many other excellent features. Id also look at the gizmo ms-ibc.
