Electrical issue? help! 9n3 GTi

Post by Lilu »

Right, so I got my car back on the Friday afternoon having been in the garage and everything was great.
Filled her up with fuel, did a 40 odd mile trip, she sat still on Saturday besides moving her onto the drive to fit new lower grills and then back off again. Sunday she did a 100 odd mile trip to Grimsby and back, not a single problem, and then another 40 odd miles back home.

Driven to and from work yesterday, fine. Driven to work this morning and my EPC light has come on and my brake lights have stopped working :( brakes work, just no lights.

Now previous to her going into the garage her brake lights were working intermittantly amongst other electrical issues (like door locks going mad, windows not closing and wipers not settling) and the EPC light has come on a couple of times but then gone again when I've restarted the car. She was in the garage for the two weeks and they're saying that they have changed some of the wiring in the a pillar and they have put in new central locking and window motors.

While fitting new grills at the weekend I noticed that there looks to be HID ballasts mounted on either side of the engine bay, one was fixed securely, one not so much so tightened it up and made it secure. They're now on my list for looking at and either sorting properly or taking out and replacing. Noticed on two occasions that when I turned my headlights on that one didnt come on the first time, but having turned them off and back on it did do that second time.

Is it likely that they are causing an issue with my brake lights?
I'm no good with wiring or electrics so I don't know if the two are connected or not so any suggestions would be great as I do not want to be taking her into the garage again having only had her back 4 days and them not having a clue what they're doing.

I've owned this car for just under 4 weeks and it has already spent over 2 weeks in the garage :(
Any help much appriciated.

I had an issue last week where my brake lights first started working intermittently and then stopped all together. Turned out to be the brake light switch (which is just above the brake pedal). Took it into my local garage and £35 later all was well again.

After a bit of googling it turns out to be a common fault on vag cars.

Thats great, thanks.
I thought it may have been something like that but not being clued up on wiring hinders me sometimes and I always think the worst :P

Yep. Sounds like you need a new brake light switch

Cheap from a dealer and easy to fit.
