GTI Brake Setup.

Hi,

Having recently aquired my 9N3 GTI, I feel an upgrade in the braking front is necessary.

I'm keen to learn what other members setup is with regards to making a decision on my own car.

A popular upgrade seems to be the 312 front/256 rear swap from other cars in the VAG range.

Is this an expensive swap? Are the calipers & carriers easily obtained? I imagine they cost £££££ new?

I also thought about staying 288/232 and aquiring a quality disc/pad option from Tarox. Again could this work out actually more expensive than the above?

My car is standard power output at the moment however a few tuning mods are more than likely but nothing serious.

Hi there, I'm running TT 225 312mm front brakes at the moment with the aim to upgrade the rears soon. Have to say the the mod was pretty cheap, I picked up the calipers and carriers for less than £150 from a car breaker on eBay, then just had to buy pads and discs. Hope that helps

I think I'm gonna go down the same road, theres a company on ebay that seem to sell refurbished calipers & carriers.
312 Fronts are £175 but the 256 rears are £250.

What discs & pads do you run?

Anyone kept the standard 288/232 and changed to tarox or the like?

For rears look at Octavia VRS rears as I think they are an easier mod.. Also might be cheaper? I run EBC red stuff pads with EBC oem discs. Have to say no complaints at all about them. Kept up with me on a track day with no brake fade and seem very capable on the road. Seem to be lasting quite well as well so overall v happy lol

I'm thinking of doing that too TT brakes seem like the way forward do you need the Tt disks or any that are the right size ?

I'm sure you can use any aftermarket 312mm disc setup providing it's for the TT etc for fitment.

Can't say I'm sure about disc thing but don't think the TT discs are anything special.. If I'm honest I don't know about TT rears but I do know for certain the VRS rears bolt straight on only have to cut the lip off the guard behind the discs. Worth a look especially if they are cheaper than TT ones..

all 256 rears will fit as long as they are from a 2wd car.

ease of fitment is the same across tt/vrs/golf anni/cupra etc

You can normally pick up 256 rears for about £120 with some naff discs and pads.. Personally i wouldnt bother. Why? I fitted them to mine and about 3 weeks later they developed the known "moo" when reversing. I dont know of any that dont do this (without fitting an anti mooing kit), and i would say that for the embarrassment and annoyance of the noise they make, they just arent worth it.

I havent noticed any difference in braking ability, and they barely look any bigger so its not like it fills out the wheel or anything because as mentioned, the guard has to be butchered to fit them.

I think you would be better off upgrading the disc and pad as being smaller they are generally cheaper anyway!

You can use the 4wd rears but need to run spacers. I got mine from a Golf Anni.

Yeh thats what i found when it started. Got the clips and they solve nothing! Need to buy the extortionately priced anti mooing kit now.

i also have 312mm S3 brakes ready for getting installing on my GTI.
only have to paint the calipers and find some upgraded discs and pads.

but may i note that the 256mm at the back is to much on Ibiza/polo platform.
we have tested the set up on an Ibiza 6L (uses polo platform) and under heavy use you clearly feel the car is in unbalance.
it brakes to hard at the rear with the 256mm.
the reason i think is because an S3 and TT have a different weight distribution and they weigh more at the rear as a Polo or Ibiza.
while normal driving you won't notice it but it might get tricky on a trackday... so beware!
the stock brakes at the rear ar more than enough in combo with 312mm so i would say, keep the money from the rear calipers and use it for another upgrade or so

anyway, i'm only sharing what we have tested before, just my 2 cents

I am running 288mm and 232 mm rear I have used mintex discs and ferodo sport pads and the braking is immense no brake fad and never struggles no matter what speed I am doing. I have the 312 mm set up on my golf gti and I have to say the polo is far better.
