Instructions on removing lower grill?

Post by aaronon »

Hi!

I feel like I'm spamming the forum with two question threads lol. But I have bought a SEL grill with the chrome but i'm wondering do VW need to fit it?

Does the old one click out? Or do you need to remove the side grills first to get at it (ie the ones where fogs would go if I had a Fog model).

Thanks for any help :)

Just pop the fog covers off and use a flat bladed screw driver to help with popping the clips open CANDYMAN has the best walk through I used his thread to give me an idea. You can use the hook tool in the boot to pull the covers off

Excellent! This is exactly what I needed as well :)

does the fog surrounds come off easily or do you have to use abit of man strength?

Awesome!!!!! Looked up CANDYMANS thread and guide! He says "the little holes at the fog light" to remove the fog covers... But I don't have fog lights so i don't know where to try and get them off! I'm afraid of breaking the latches :(

Are there not screws in the grill too?

Hahaha! Man strength made me laugh that. The fogs do need a bit of "man strength" but it's no hard task really so don't worry too much.

Have you got a pic of your grille it should still have the caps at least covering where the fogs should go? I'd imagine rather than being a fog surround its more of a full cap/ cover but same principle? Are you fitting fog lights at the same time or just the grille?

If you offer up your new grille over the top of the old one you can easily see where the clips are and that little hook tool is your best friend when it comes to pulling the grille off because you can only release the clips so much with the screw driver and the rest is down to using the hook to pull it free :)

Yeah ill post a photo of my side grills tomorrow and maybe you could show me where I should try and pull them off?

They're just standard ones like the models with no fogs so I'm just wondering where I stick in the VW tool! I thought there were screws in the lower centre grill but it looks like there aren't! :):)

Ah right I get you! Do I stick the tool between the fog surround and the paint at the points where I think there are latches?

Oh ho. I didn't notice! Will check in the morning! That's a tiny hole is that where you stick the tool?!

This sounds increasingly like sexual advice!

So you don't try and pry latches off between the paint and the edge of the plastic? That's good as I'd break them lol

If that's what you fog covers look like it should have the hole to pry off one of the members JCT1991 has a guide when he fitted his new bulbs and he used a coat hanger (genius idea :) ) then the sel grille is just held by the tabs visible just take your time as a few people on other forums have cracked or snapped some of the clips. I don't suppose it matters if your replacing it but take care with the parts that are going back on haha :)

Yes those are mine! Can't see a hole in that picture but i'll do a search for 'JCT1991' and his thread!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to help me out!

What are the chances of me pulling on that hole so hard that the clips break and I can't get the fog parts back in?

If they don't have the hole I just had a "light bulb" moment :/ if there isn't a hole... Get a coat hanger and stick it through the gaps and use even force to remove it :D

Yeah that's a good idea! Gonna do this one night after work I think when my grill arrives! Mine won't have a hole as I guess they just include that so you can easily change the bulb!

But the coat hanger is great thanks!

Bought this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 1072569451

Says it'll be here wednesday - friday so will post back if I get it on :):)

Also need to see if my Polo BCM can accept Fog's and i'll be happy! :D

Thanks again :)

Really not looking forward to doing this lol, breaking clips is a nightmare! Seems a lot of work to change a front lower grill :(
