Major power steering fluid leak

Post by Seagal »

Well I keep having problems with this car, after successfully fitting a new alternator last week, I threw in some Stop Leak to try and fix a slight power steering fluid leak I'd noticed a couple of weeks ago. However after driving the car on Saturday, I noticed it was leaking at an alarming rate,Image . That's my Polo up in the corner and all that mess on the ground has came from my car.
I thought it might be oil going by the colour but my levels seem ok, the power steering reservoir is empty though.
The car only cost me £900 and I'm really not keen to spend money taking it to the garage, I'm getting a new car in August. I've been told I'd be at least £200 to get it sorted, I'm wandering if there's any way of repairing this by myself? Even a temporary fix to get it through the next few months? From what I can gather the leak is coming from a crack at the bottom of the power steering hose.
A workmate suggested sticking some jubilee clips over the leak but surely the pressure would blow them off in no time at all?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The hoses are replaceable, and if it is split/cracked it should be replaced - certainly something as important as power steering hoses I wouldnt play games with.

Can you get a pic of the damage where its cracked/leaking from?

Here's a photo of the leak, it seems to be coming out at the bend, you can see where it's dripped out and ran down.

In my opinion, its time to replace that hose

If its dumped that much fluid, its a bit worrying.

Yeah I'd tend to agree, I wasn't aware of how corroded it was either. Guess I'll search around for a decent quote, I'm nowhere technically minded enough to replace it myself.
