Splitting engine and 'box?

Post by 6n2stan »

I've spent the day disconnecting stuff ready to drop the gearbox off. So far I've done:

Clutch cable
Reversing light, speedo wiring and all the wiring over the bell housing is free
Both driveshafts
Rear engine mount
Left 'box mount
Battery and tray out
Starter motor unbolted and moved back
All bolts out of bell housing

I've lowered the engine/box down and I can't separate it

To confirm, there were 2 top bell housing bolts, 1 front lower bolt and 2 bottom bolts going through the sump back into the 'box. Plus the 3 starter motor bolts.

At the back there is another bolt (I think) that possibly goes into the bell housing too, it's got what looks like an engine bracing mount connected to it just above the rear mount.

Can anyone confirm whether I need to remove this bolt (IIRC 18mm?) or not and have I missed something?

Any help would be much appreciated as I've got 2 days off work so need it off tomorrow so I can asses the damage to the 'box

There's one more at the back

It has a gear shift stabiliser attached to it

You need to disconnect the gear shift cables also, remove the stabiliser, then remove the bolt

I would recommend you get a Haynes manual as it is vital you do the bolts back up to the correct torques

Winner, cheers Alex, I had a suspicion that was another connection.

I'd forgot to mention that I'd removed the gearshift cables (rods?) too. The selector is jammed at the mo so I had to have it apart just to get the rear mount bolt out!

I have a Haynes manual which I've kinda gone along with even though it doesn't cover the GTI. It covers DOHC engines which will do. As you say it's torque figures I need as its all alloy by the look so could be easily buggered up!

Thank again :D

The Haynes manual torque figures are the same for the GTI ;)

Right, the box is off, that rear bolt below the starter motor is a right PITA!

Next snag. What size socket is it to get the clutch cover off? 10mm is too big, 9mm won't go on! Is it something special?
