Cutting out an 3 beeps

Post by dantheram »

I have recently been using my air con and when I put it on soon after I start the car it seems to make the engine cut out and I get 3 beeps and have to restart the car whilst driving along!! When the air con clutch engages it hammers the revs too. What's happening??

Any input greatly appreciated!

Probably out of gas

Get it scanned with VCDS

out of gas - cutting the whole engine out? is that possible, its incredibly dangerous to have this happen on a car.

I dug out my trusty vagcom cable and cannot get it to work at all, so cannot pull the codes.

it just scans for ages and says "no response from the controller"

That's a bit concerning

Can you scan other controllers other than air con successfully?

Cannot scan anything. No response from any controllers. Assume the cable is working as it still tests ok in setup. Hoping it's down to my battery which I suspect is weak. Going to test it tomorrow along with the alternator.

Can some modules jam up the data link from the ecu to vcds? Don't understand why it won't talk??

Checked the battery an no load engine off its 12.4v and on start its 8.69v. Engine on and everything switched on (aircon, wipers headlights radio etc) it's at 13.69-14. So by the looks of that my battery and alternator are ok. However, as I've said before I do struggle to start in the cold and sometimes it starts and cuts out.

First problem I've had where I can't figure out what to do.

Check your com port, and that Kbaud is set to 9600 in the VCDS settings, and on the com port itself

13.69 is a bit low for running. Normally its 14-14.5

Battery itself could still be faulty, but you wont know till the colder weather comes back - then youll need to see how quickly it recovers to 12V

Check your fuses as you may have a blown one for the ECU.

If it has low volts when everything is on isn't that the alternator?

Depends on the voltage coming out the alternator - Measure the output from that

Mine didn't respond to vagcom a couple of years ago. I ended up taking it to VW. They couldn't connect either. In the end it just started working again with no explanation. Every time I plug in now it's a fingers crossed moment! :?
