Bluemotion EGR valve replacement - MPG

Post by chunky63 »

Hello All,

My 2011 Bluemotion has just had the EGR valve changed under waranty by my local dealer Polo just turned 35k miles and has been steadly doing 65-75 mpg on my daily commute which for Devon is pretty good I think. The engine management light came up on the dashboard and the dealer diagnosed it as a faulty EGR valve.

However since the valve change the mpg has dropped to 55-65 mpg. Does anyone know of why this might be? Dealer tells me that the new parts will need running in and my mpg will get better over time and asked me to be patient for a month and come back if its still a problem.

Its been a week since it was changed so lets see how it goes but I cant see why it needs running in, surely its just a valve and only one part of the system.

I would appreciate any help or advice.

Thanks

are you sure about the mpg difference?
The polo I bought had already had a egr replaced so I cant really help, but would be interested to know
I cant believe the mpg will go up when its run in. never heard of running in a egr to be honest.

Thanks.
I'm pretty sure, that is I'm looking at the readout on the MFA and I use both the No 1 & No 2 setting.
I reset it before a long journey or use it to check my daily commute.

I've been keeping a log when I refuel so I can check it long term.

I will be getting back to them next week as it's only doing 35-40 round town which cant be right for a Bluemotion.

Cheers

I'm not too sure about the drop in MPG or running in the EGR valve but our cars mpg fluctuates from low fifties to about 65mpg. This is a standard 2011 1.2 TDI with 33K. Today my EML light came on, nothing else, I wonder if my MPG is lower than it should be and if the EML has flagged something up that's possibly been causing it?

Edit - 24/7/2013 Just had VW Roadside Assistance out and he's confirmed that the faults were a faulty fuel sensor and EGR valve. It's seems that the EGR valve going is common on higher mileage 1.6 TDI's which the 1.2 is based on.

Thanks.
First time the EML light came on was in March 2013 at about 27k. This was diagnosed as an exhaust sensor and was replaced under warranty.

Update on the MPG. It seems to be getting back to normal and on a normal drive into work this morning it showed 70mpg on the MFA.

Cheers

Mine came on in January too and I told them that I suspected the EGAr valve but they dismissed it and said that it was the fuel pressure sensor. 2 fuel pressure sensors in 4 months? I think extended warranty is on the cards. Good to hear the MPG is getting back to normal, I've seen 74 mpg when driving back from Scotland doing a steady 80 but seem to get really low mpg day to day, my drive consists of 70 motorway miles everyday and I only see 55mpg? This week for example I've got 270 miles to three quarters of a tank. :|

The 1.2 non bluemotion seems best around 50-65MPH. I got 66 today on 40 rural/dual carriageway miles which isnt bad at all

I'll give it a go and see how I get on, it's in the garage as we speak and Europcar don't have a diesel until 6 :(

Thank again all,

Interesting trip into work yesterday which consists of 8 miles of dual carriageway and 3 miles of rural roads. I switched off the air con and driving steady at 60mph on the DC the MPG was up to 80.

My conclusion is that the hot weather hasnt helped the MPG with the air con on constantly at full blast :D :D

Cheers again all
