Using loads of oil

Post by dantheram »

What would cause the car to use loads of oil - other than a obvious leak on to the driveway?

I seem to be running low alot quicker than i previously did.

Headgasket
Burning Oil
Leaking Oil
Blocked crankcase breather

The GTI engines generally use very little oil.

There is a known problem with the crankcase breather leaking at the back of the block, as well as the sump nuts coming loose.

Look for blue smoke when accelerating, probably more when the engine is cold

Is there anyting i can rule out by the fact that i never see any blobs of oil on the floor when ive been parked up?

that means its not the sump atleast i guess. Also, there is none of the 'mayonaise like' crap on my oil cap so could this rule out the head gasket?

How do i check the breather?

Thanks,

Dan

The GTIs have a full undertray so sadly it doesn't rule out the sump as you'd likely never see it unless it was removed

I never put the undertray back on after i was working down there once.

What psi should i get from a compression test - going to buy a tester to rule out the piston rings.
