Musty smell from air con?

Post by Match »

I'm getting a really off smell from my air conditioning when it's switched off or just blowing through air. Can anyone recommend a solution? I've seen sprays which are meant to clear out fungus but the reviews are varied.

Is there any way to remove the air filter and manually clean it?

Smelly air con is a pretty common problem. Depending on how long since it was last done, you may be due an aircon service (not just a re-gas) as a service involves removal and cleaning of the condenser which grows all kinds of mould and causes the smell when switch off.

I find that if you switch off air con 5 minutes before getting to your destination, turn off recirc if it's on, open the windows and blast the blowers it alleviates the smell and in theory dries off the condenser and help reduce mould buildup.

The condenser doesn't grow mould, think you mean the evaporator.

Best bet is to get a full aircon service with antibacterial additive and also fit a new pollen filter too.

Using the aircon regularly, and up to full blast with recycle on once a month will avoid this issue

You can buy a deodourising air con 'bomb' from halfords which has worked well for me in the past.

I dont really have the money for a full aircon service so I reckon I'll just buy deodorising spray. I have recently been blasting the aircon now and then and the smell has improved :)
