knocking from passengers side

Post by cam20vt »

Hopefully someone could shed some light for me, my 08 gti has a knocking when setting off and sometimes over speed bumps or if I accidently hit a pothole (easily done where I live) , its coming from the passengers side but I cant pin point where its coming from, the car had a new gearbox mount and engine mount when I did clutch (about 2 month ago) as there was play and the engine mounting snapped about 3 week ago but its still knocking, ive checked everything I can think of and cannot find play in anything, it knocks 3 or 4 times when setting off normally and sometimes when I change into 2nd and put accelerator back on as normal any help will be much appreciated

Check subframe bolts and lower arm bolts, mine were ever so slightly loose and made an awful noise when setting off

Did you change the dogbone mount too?

Sounds a lot like what mine was doing, the bolt was on a little loose but the lower arm was moving and the noise was transferring through the whole subframe making it sound really violent

No its got a foam ramair airfilter, thought it could be the base of that banging on the airbox so I removed the air box and made sure the filter was secured in place it sounds like a bush or mounting when it knocks, its really loud and easily noticeable when setting off but when its on the ramp I cant find anything at all with play its driving me mad

Have you checked the dog bone mount bolt? Mine was about 1/4 turn loose and sounded like the car was gonna fall apart lol

The upper gearbox mount bolts had come ever so slightly loose, either that or the mechanic didnt tighten them properly
