Underbody tray dropped off

Post by monkeychild »

Turning into our close I heard a Big Bang. Initial thought were WTF!! I checked and the undertray that runs along the sill on the drivers side has come off. I can see the bolts coming out from the bodywork where it goes over to connect, however the clips are knackered or missing. What's the best way to repair this??

These clips are steel and they "melt" due to water and winter salt, so you need to order in a bag of them as the other side will probably close to falling off as well.

I took both sides off my wife's 2003MY Polo 9N 1.4 SE, cleaned the grit/dirt/sand that gets lodged in there and needed to replace a few clips that could not be re-used - I tend to do that every few years and spray these clips with WaxOil or something like that.

Newer cars now use plastic retaining clips so that should not happen to them, I've seen a few, mainly Ibiza around with these tray(s) hanging down a bit, owner should keep an eye on these things so as to avoid losing/damaging them.

Merry Christmas! Try N 907 965 02 - that number was good back in 2007, but if it has been superceded the parts listing will provide a cross reference to the correct number.

As far as I can remember, these "bolts" sticking out are just ridged studs, ie not threaded, so I tend to use a suitable size of deep socket to force them on, some of the originals, if not too rusted, can be reused if you flatted back down the bits that grip the ridged studs a bit.

If you have a wire brush try cleaning up these ridges studs to remove some of the built up dirt and rust so that these retainers have something to grip on to.

Eh, no, the cover being discussed here are the side trays not the cover under the engine/gearbox.

I'd play safe and suggest no! It could be that while the centre will open up and grip well enough, the outer diameter might not be large enough.

Edit, I'd think that these bits are not what you want because, they are not compatible with the Polo 9N - from that site's listing and VAG use a different type between the heatshield application and the underbonnet soundproofing fixing.

But now you have drawn my attention to the seatbelt "button stops" - so I'll order up one of them - thanks for that!
