Air Con 1.2 2012

Post by now260 »

Hello
I want to refill the aircon in my 1.2 Polo 6R due to a damaged radiator ( now replaced) and am trying to buy a kit to do this. I have been asked whether this Polo has a standard twin port R134a aircon system with a 14mm low pressure port and the capacity of the system.

Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks alot

First, you will need the kit to evacuate the complete fridge system, just refilling with moisture and air in there will not provide a proper solution as the moisture in the system will freeze and cause a blockage. Second, do you know how much system oil has been lost while this was leaking and how much was lying in the condenser (radiator) - if not, you could end up with the compressor failing.

After all that, to find out what refrigerant is in the system and its weight, you will need to read the labelling under the bonnet and maybe then need to translate that from a VAG number into which F-Gas that refers to, like as you say typically R134a.

In your position, I'd reckon that a trip to a proper Air Con repair place is needed, or a call to a mobile Air Con operator, both of these will be cheaper than going to a VAG place.

For what it is worth, because of the fridge industry's inability to quickly provide an alterative, and to provide support for Air Con places in a timely manner, I think that very few manufacturers have committed themselves to using newer products, I think an industry wide EEC concession was issued as time was running out.

OK thanks, I hadn't realised it would be so technical! The radiator (condenser) was replaced with a new one so the system should be empty. I will have a ring round to get a price.

@RUN4MO, Mercedes did a crash test with the 'new' refrigerants that the EU want us to use, and it was NASTY, so they're refusing to use it.

The Hydrogen Fluoride released when the gas burns is horrible- it forms hydrofluric acid when it comes in contact with tissue and can cause blindness.
