Given that Skoda are consistently winning awards for quality... I'd hardly say that sharing parts with a Skoda is a bad thing!
I think in the main, Skoda gives good results when the model is a VW designed platform, ie Octavia and Superb. The press, who hand out these awards never buy and run these cars with their own money, they just appraise them against the opposition - and in some sectors that means comparing them with VW, they end up being better because they cost less.
One thing to remember when it comes to car snobbery, in proper developed areas of mainland Europe, the Golf, Focus and Astra are considered equals, it is just in UK we view them as being in different leagues.
To the OP, supporting your local garage and missing out the likes of Uncle Arnold was a very good move, these clowns just love to try to get a deposit off you for a car that is located else where, at a place where you have no right to know.
I was mostly thinking about things like the JD Power survey- the one which is a survey of owners! http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/overall-results/1206902
My parents recently got a Superb estate- just a basic one with the 1.4 TSI engine, and they love it. It's only done 800 miles though, but is apparently very nice to drive, and the spec is great for the price.
Poor faithful Corsa, you've binned it and you are happy - shame on you? How long will it take you to feel okay parking the Polo in strange places, and watch you don't touch high kerbs with that sticky out front spoiler bit! Have fun with your new car!

There was a little thought of sadness as I left it at the scrapyard, It was still a good motor that drove till it couldn't go no more.
Only problem was cost of repair, Windscreen was needing replaced, extensive corrosion underneath.
As you said I could and would dump it anywhere, it was simply invincible... no one would want to touch it I would give it 'all' when driving in certain situations and conditions.... it was bum to tarmac driving.
Polo is great... but I do miss 'feeling' the ride of the corsa... the noises, the bumps etc heh.
Yes, I'm afraid that is modern cars for you, with comfort comes a bit of disconnection, I noticed this first when I moved from 1991 VX Cav GSI 4X4 to a brand new 2000 VW Passat 2.8V6 4Motion, it was going from "sitting in a fully connected" car to an almost "sitting on top off and driving by wire" car, that is progress. On the subject of dumping an old car anywhere, maybe there is a place for also having a "mini Lada" for these times that you need to park in town. My B8 S4, tends to hide in its garage and wife's old Polo gets taken into town. By the way, my B8 S4 also has that sticky out bit on the front that will make contact first - so far so good! Enjoy your shiny red Polo! I was concerned about getting a car without a sunroof, as I've had a sunroof on all my cars since 1982, but so far I've not missed it.
Guys, any tips for stone chips on the bonnet ? Ive been driving it a week and there must be 5-6 which are deep and show white on the red paint, Im keeping distance on dual carriageways etc.
It depends what polish and wax you use. If you used a decent wax and it's been applied properly, you shouldn't have to touch it for up to 6 months. Polishing is mainly to get rid of mild scratches and swirls. If you wash it correctly every fortnight, three weeks tops, with a deep pile wash mitt, it should keep it looking shiny
I'm really admiring the 16" KNIGHT alloys that I spot occasionally on polo 6R's. Im going to have to pull the trigger and be part of the club.
Also planning on getting the VW retrofit LED DRL's, as seen in the video below. Ive spoken with one of the techs in the workshop at my local garage and mentioned that a fair few people online have purchased these only to have them codded wrongly, where the are on constantly, as DLR, with sidelights, and with dipped main, or the dipped beam still acts as a DRL along with these running. I have shown him the below video and he has assured me that they will be coded correctly by his team if I order them in!
Few wee niggles - Still collecting a stupidly high amount of bonnet stone chips, - I have heeded the advice given on here and taking EXTRA care with distance when driving, and it makes no difference, I think there genuinely is an issue with the paint quality, but im in no position to sort this now.
Also whenever I drive unintentionally over a pothole, dint in the road or drain (usually when at higher speeds of 30, and on a few occasions, 70mph motorway driving, there is an almighty cracking/snapping/metal clunking sound. The noise is unbelievable and I don't think it should happen, Nothing appears to be hanging down on the underside. Any thoughts ?
