Gti starter motor removal

Post by scott18T »

Had a look about swaping the starter at the weekend, but it it looks a real nightmare to do.
Is there an easy way of doing this job?

You ideally need to be underneath

It's held in by three bolts that go through the gearbox housing

You need to remove the cabling from underneath ideally before you remove the bolts

Once that's done it just pulls out then can be removed.

I found getting the top bolt out the hardest, I ended up putting a (19mm?) socket on it and all my extensions across the back of the engine to undo it from the drivers side wheels arch!

I wonder if it was one of the bellhousing bolts that was a struggle? It was done with the gearbox change.

Yeah thats likely the one thats an absolute pig to remove - which is an 18mm i think. Absolute nightmare bolt.
