Polo 1.4 TDI - starting on 2 cylinders?

Post by wxyz »

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice as to exactly what this fault might be (and what the worst case scenario might be re cost to fix)...

I have a 2003 Polo 1.4 TDI that seems to start on only 2 cylinders. It runs roughly for a few miles but will, after stopping for a few minutes, start perfectly the next time and run normally. The underlying problem is clearly still present at this point though because the engine sometimes continues to idle (very slightly) roughly - something which can be difficult to pick up on unless you're looking for it .

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Might be one of the fuel hoses drawing in air, check for air bubbles in the fuel hoses when the engine is running. Also, is the fuel filter old?

Thanks for the reply & suggestions. The fuel filter was replaced when the car was serviced in December. I'll have the fuel hoses checked though. Someone else has also suggested the symptoms could be caused by faulty injector wiring so I'll have that checked too if necessary. I'll update the thread once I know what the problem is. Thanks again.
