Windscreen Wiper Stalk

Hi there, I recently got my POLO Match 1.2 and I am very pleased with it!
However, I'm still coming to grips with some of the features of the car and I am wondering if anyone could help me out!
Basically, when I flick the wiper stalk into the first position, I want to know what it does, as in the manual its called interval wipers, but I don't really understand the point of them, along with the small lever on the top which moves from left to right.

If anyone has any more information on this I would be very grateful.

1st click has set amount of seconds between each swipe
clicker on the top adjusts the speed (slowest being on the left)

The small lever on top of the stalk adjusts the "pause" time between the interval wipes.

If you have rain sensor then the small lever adjusts the sensitivity of the sensor.
