Gearbox problem? 1.9TDi 2003

Hi,
CV joint boot split on my 2003 1.9TDi and have no been told that there's play on the driveshaft due to worn gearbox bearings.

So, a couple of questions:
- Is a replacement gearbox the only way to go? Can the bearings be replaced?
- If I just replaced the boot and the bearings keep wearing, will it be a gradual failure or a catastrophic one?

I would simply replace only the drive shaft boot, any play on the driveshaft won't have any effect on the life of the boot. Get a 2nd opinion on the alleged wear on the gearbox, as I would have thought that if this was true you would have lost all your gearbox oil by now and noticed oil where you park!.
