My dealer sent me the AFRL details to confirm and said they'd need a valid insurance certificate to tax the car - I said I presumed this would be dealt with by themselves as the car had a years free insurance - their reply was they'd check, but it might need me to go direct to VW for this...
Has anyone got experience of the free insurance offer and how it was managed? I had a similar offer with my current Astra when it was purchased and it was all done by the dealer through Vauxhall.
Free insurance offer - managed by dealer or VW direct?

I seem to remember when I took advantage of the free insurance offer the day I collected the car they handed me a 14 day cover note and said the certificate would follow once all the details had been confirmed. That all appeared to be dealt with by Vdub insurance. They had already Taxed the car without anything from me (other than my details)
Email them and ask for clarification, so it's in writing what the process is.

Thanks, I'll find out soon enough, just wanted to be pre-armed with an understanding
That's how my Astra free insurance worked too...

I've been told by the dealer that they will arrange insurance at the point of collection through VW.
If in doubt just call the 0800 VW customer service number - I've found them to be a million times better than speaking to the dealer direct.

Re: Free insurance offer - managed by dealer or VW direct?
This is how i did it..
Car was delivered to dealer last Friday, and I arranged for collection on Monday. My dealer phoned me on the Friday night to arrange everything and he said in order to tax the car etc we need the insurance setting up. So he gave me the number for the Insurance and the unique dealer code (this is a series of numbers xxx).
I phoned the insurance, go through all the rigmarole as usual, and you get given 53 weeks free. The first 7 days is a courtesy week so the dealer can tax your car etc. This is given as a cover note which is sent to you and the dealer, and they do the rest - that way everything is ready to go on collection day. Very easy process in my opinion, and then the 12 months automatically follows on after the 7 day courtesy insurance.. I received all my insurance policy documentation yesterday along with my tax disc (as they give you a cover note for the tax disc allowing you 2 weeks, for the disc to arrive by post) and V5 form. Alls i need to do now is send proof of no claims.
You can have 2 named drivers on the policy for no extra cost, the only thing that they charge for is a change of address.

They do allow business use, I called them up and said I needed it for work as sometimes I have to go to another site that is not my permanent place of work, they added it free of charge!
