Polo Dune

Post by macp »

Swmbo is wanting a Polo Dune and we were going to go for the 1.4TDi but having read a few horror stories of total engine failure including this one (see link). Its kind of put us off enough to start looking at the 1.4 petrol instead. Any body have any experiences, thoughts or comments.

I'm sure if you look hard enough, you'll find horror stories on just about every engine including the 1.4 petrol you're looking for. Kinda like, ask the question enough, and you'll get the answer you want (or don't want).

I've only seen the problem the guy's talking about being reported maybe two or maybe three times. Considering there are thousands of these engines out there and bad news travel fast, I wouldn't be put off. Take it you haven't heard of the 1.4 TDI Polo which has done over 600,000 km on the original engine? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iRv1FQqVe0

Or the 1.4 TDIs in Europe running over twice stock power on standard internals (one's allegedly running 170bhp, but I haven't seen any dyno plots).

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the 1.4 TDI. Then again I'm biased as I have one. Only has 76k miles, but 50k of those have been with a remap to ~100bhp. Have no plans on getting rid of it any time soon.
