you might wanna get your clutch adjusted and your gearbox oil level checked spanna.......... mines a year older than yours but its still soft and smooth as a babys behind coated with johnson's when everything's going "right" :D
(and a total pig when it isnt!!)

the clutch control comes in time.. you just gotta concentrate on being smooth and gradual with it. when you get the touch, you can get moving from idle without touching the throttle. uphill. ((well it depends what hill - cant quite tackle my driveway as its too steep..)).... and a fairly new clutch will be a lot harder to deal with than an old one as they take a few hundred miles to properly bed in and stop being on/off switches!

what was that about getting gears other than 1st, groovy???? problems with it? :(

When I first got it, the clutch was badly adjusted and very very low and the gear oil needed changing, so the gearshift was really lumpy, especially when I was used to driving my dad's clio. Tis fine now though, I've adjusted a few things and I've got used to it, now I prefer it to the clio :)

One word of advice about the gearshift in old polos, never ever try to fight it. Don't get stressed with it, if it doesn't go in first time, just come back out and gently try to push it in, you'll find that the more gentle you are with it the more willing it'll be to shift. With a bit of practice you'll be able to get faster and more comfortable at changing, but just take your time while you're still unused to it :)

i know what you mean groovy, my old mk2 was a bit delicate toward the end, i ran an uprated clutch for her last few years and squeezed so much torque out it shocked me, esp for a 4 spd. Least it was a manual cable, the mk3 came with a self adjusting piece of tat

yeah thats a good tip, took me a while to discover it for myself :) if it wont go, pull the stick back out of where you just tried it and have another go rather than forcing it....

dont have to do it all that slowly... if it's really having trouble (good e.g. - getting 1st when stopped at or approaching lights... bad e.g. - knackered clutch going from 2nd to 3rd ;)) it might feel like you're trying to "chisel" your way into that gear with many quick, repeated, relatively gentle jabs... but it'll work better than a single sledgehammer attempt.

(remember to keep the clutch down while doing it tho... unless it's totally stuck, then you might need to lift for a half sec in neutral just to spin the cogs out of a rare bad position....... EDIT - um, i mean the locking bits on the synchronisers of course :D)

the meet i think is on the 28th/29th? just before the bank holiday... think i might have to take me hols in the week before then, as there's that event, and work want me in for the bank hol :(
