iPhone mounts/chargers - will the cupholders do?

Post by TheFrog »

I've been looking at iPhone holders, so I can use my iPhone 5S as a satnav. I don't like screen-mounted holders, as they impair vision, have long trailing cables and leave marks on the glass. I had thought about a vent-mounted holder, but they conceal the row of switches mounted above the radio, impair the flow of air and could damage the vent.

Looking at photos of the 6C interior, I'm wondering if I can't just put the iPhone in a cupholder and plug the charger into the 12V socket just behind. I realise this does not give eye-level viewing of the screen, but it will be a tidy solution.

Any other suggestions?

With regard to hiding cables, the piller trim is really easy to remove and there is tones of space to hide the cables under the dash.

I'm looking at the brodit range - specifically this:
http://www.brodit.com/product.html?id=6 ... &year=2015

I'm not 100% as to what is a 2015 model year polo though......

I'd then add a iPhone 5S cradle which will be cabled to the USB socket for power / tunes.

It doesn't look like there's any difference between the A pillars of the 6c and 6r. I wouldn't want to attach anything there if the car had curtain airbags though... although they're not standard in the UK!
The 9n has a really useful little tray in the top of the dash, as does the Mk.5 Golf. Perfect place to put a phone, all you need is a couple of spots of blu-tack! And they were both designed long before smartphones with satnav apps were even a flicker in Steve Jobs' eyes!

Thanks for the comments. I just Googled 'cupholder iphone dock' and came across this sort of thing. Has anyone tried one of these in a Polo 6C/6R? Is there enough space above the cupholders to dock the iPhone easily?

EDIT: just read a review of these. Apparently the phone tends to flop forwards under acceleration. Pity, it looked like the ideal solution :(

Ugh, thats a shame they look like a good idea and would be fantastic fit for the 6C. Might order one off amazon and return it if its no good.

Going on these reviews, I wouldn't bother: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/HE017 ... older-dock

I ended up ordering one of these. A bit 'universal' and I'm not 100% sure it will fit the 6C, but it got good write-ups.

Just a word of warning, I held my iPhone 6 above the cup-holder, and there id very little room for it. Would take a pic, but my phone is my camera! It will fit landscape if the cradle isn't to big but no chance in portrait.

Hmm, I feared as much. Thanks for the heads-up.

I would use the satnav in landscape, so I'll have to see. I got it from Amazon, so if it's too bulky, I'll return it.

EDIT: I have cancelled the order for the above. It would have been frustrating not to have portrait mode for normal phone usage. Thanks again for the heads-up.

Have a look at a kenu air frame it clips on the air vent (theirs copy's on eBay for a few pounds)

Thanks, but I don't really like the idea of a vent-mounted clip. In the winter the phone's going to get really hot and it will obstruct the switches, especially the heated seats which I use a lot.

Would something like this work? The arm is flexible so it could possibly be angled to fit better.

Edit: Or even this? Depending on how strong the clamp is.

I think the gearstick would be in the way with that solution.

I had the iPhone dock idea a long time ago. Glad I got the RNS 510 for navigation now instead. :)
