Got my first service since owning my car (38k) and Im worried that the evil VDub dealers going to take all my modding money away
Does anyone know what it actually costs? and if this includes the usual oil, airfilt, and plugs?
Me and the Mrs are going to try and get to Billing for the first time (the cars still quite standard so dont laugh too much) so any tips would be great otherwise it may mean no food till then
i work for a vw dealer we charge £68 per hour labor 40k service takes less than 2 hrs and then u got the parts air filter , pollen filter , spark plugs , oil filter ,oil then u got the extras possable brake fluid change vw recomend it gets changed every 2 yrs usaly depending on how u drive might need pads too and then theres tyres legal limit is 1.6mm +vat u probly look over the £200 mark sorry for being a sender of bad news looks like the moddings gonna wait
Sorry to brand all vdub dealers evil mate.
Cheers for the info. I may try and do the plugs, air filter, oil filter ,oil myself, are you guys normally ok with that? I know the pads are a must as theyre totally shot, sorry to ask a hundred and one questions but any ideas what you would charge or should I get down the homeless shelter now?
Its rubbish, because I mine is an approved car with full VW service history and they didn't change the air filter nor the pollen filter, the plugs are crap, the brake fluid doesn't need changing, but the accesory belt doesn't look to good. So for their 230 quid they basically changed the oil, and even then they over filled it and buggered the air filter and fouled the throttle body - overtightened the sump nut and left oily hand prints in the interior whist simultaneously scratching the paintwork. Also no-one thought to look at the tyres since the drivers tyre was bold on the inside indicating too much toe-out.
What bothers me is that most people these days just drive their car until a red light comes on and then go to get it fixed. so they rely blindly on the servicing that is done every year. This is the way that it should be ideally; unfortunately, vw are just not good enough to be trusted with this sort of thing. You can save yourself a great deal of hastle in the long run by checking every week or so the fluid levels, consumption and simple things like that.
AT this time of year I strongly suggest that people check that the coolant level is up to the MAX when cold and next time you get back from the shops open the bonnet and leave the engine running until the fan comes on and check that it goes off again. -If you drive to cornwall, I bet you pass about a dozen cars on the hard shoulder, whose owner didn't even bother to kick the tyres before setting off with 5 kids and a caravan.
On the inside of the handbook/service log that you should have with the car it will detail the parts that are replaced in each service - my car's across the other side of the road so forgive me for not popping out and writing up what it says
And on the subject of VW dealer servicing - on the plus side all parts they replace are gauranteed (sp!?) for 12 months/60,000 miles. Says so on the receipt (sp lol) I believe...
My last service was the 3-year/60,000 mile service which was a very reasonable £156, although this doesn't include the cambelt change which popped early and was replaced under warranty.
on services we have to run throught a hudge check thingy on the computer print it and this tells us what u do for that vehicle at that milage i havent got a check sheet with me but of top of my head this is what it involoves
i am not trying to stick up for main deelers just cos i work for one

i must admit this should not have happend>>>> left oily hand prints in the interior whist simultaneously scratching the paintwork. but can i ask how u know the sump nut was overtightend ??????? sounds like u had a 10k lube to me and what deeler did you go to
cheers
I know it's pink, cuz i can see it through the engine coolant bottle. By the way, the bottle is way dirty! Is this normal?
Also, aren't VW supposed to check the engine coolant too?
I've got another question, sorry for being so persistent...
I'm getting free-play on the accelerator pedal.
Meaning, i can move it up slightly with my hand, where it won't have no effect on the acceleration of the car. It's like about 5 cm up and down i can move it, where the mechanism doesn't put it back in it's original position.
yeah we check the antifreeze content on 20ks and 40ks dont worry about the play its a chartistic for the vehicle everone i seen doo it its too hard to explain over here so if u are at the polo show look out for me and i will show u
Its just had its 30k service (before I bought it) and it was carried out by Banbury in oxford. The sump nut required an extension bar and heavy grunting to shift. I had to remove it to take some oil out because they over filled the engine causing it to smoke. It pumped oil up the breather burning the foam part of the filter and filling the paper part up with oil. IMO quite a serious error on their part. Asside from that, the filter had never been changed being quite black with crud. Its one thing to say you only need to change it at xxK intervals, but quite another when it is clearly full of crap. The box under the windscreen somehow is full of composting leaves, presumably they don't go under there till 40k?
Basically I've had to fix many little obvious things that could turn into large problems if driven by someone who relies only on servicing. Like minor damage underneath that needs sealing to prevent corrosion, leaking power steering pump, corroded boot switch, OVERFILLED OIL! I do not normally buy from garages or read much into the *approved* rating of cars etc but.... Basically as a professional engineer - I'm not impressed, not at all.
The DTI did a survey in the oxford area and had 30 cars serviced at 20 different garages a mixture of dealers and generic, these cars had normal known surveyed faults such as low coolant, very worn brake pads etc.
Not one of those cars involved was serviced correctly to the absolute minimum standard. five came back with new faults!
Since I have full warranty I have elected to have some faults corrected by a VW garage in Birmingham, there is one particular engineer who is very good indeed, and I insist that only he touch it.
well, vdub say for the service for my car at 38k will be £230 . Not exactly the figure I was after but s**t happens and I think that it will be worth it in the long run
Thanks for the advice its made me realise that it needs to be done through the dealer, but will probably leave it for another 500 mile (I take it they give you a leeway ).
