Fuel Filter ?

Has anyone else had issues with what i think is the fuel filter on the petrol tank.

I had a real stink of petrol today when i got home.. petrol was pouring off the underside. Looked to be coming from a coke can sized cylinder on the back of the fuel tank. The AA said it's knackerd and not to drive anywhere in the it.

Is this an item that should be replaced in services etc ? is it a known issue ?

To think i swapped from a perfectly reliable Toyota to this in the hope of saving some cash....

When I bought my '97 polo I replaced this as part of my servicing of the car, I think it's recommended to do it about every 40k

The coke can sized object with hoses coming out of either side is the fuel filter and I bought a 'oem' replacement from German Sweedish and French for about £9 and two jublie clips for around £2. However be careful since brand X replacements are sometimes larger (mine was) and I had to cut some of the plastic holder and resecure it by drilling holes in what was left of the holder cable tying it.

well it's been replaced.. the guy said it's the first itme in 35 years he's ever seen a fuel filter corrode through like that.. still it's replaced and the car seems to have a new lease of life.. no stalling and dropping revs at 80mph now.. also managed 200 miles on half a tank (slightly enthusiasitc driving as well )

I think the previous owner's service peeps didn;t do too god a job on her as my spanner chap has found a few obvious faults which shuold have been picked up at the last service 2k ago...

looks like a new heatshield is needed on the exhaust as well..

Do you buy your petrol from the same place most of the time?? If the petrol station is a bit kack, the condensation in their storage tanks maybe getting out through the pumps into the fuel, my cloest station used to be like that and they fooked my friend's motorbike (delicate 50cc!) due to too mush water in the fuel.
Car's are a lot less delicate, especially the VeeDubs, I just thought that might help resolve why your filter was corroded.
