Why a 4litre tank

why is it that the mk3 polo has a 4 litre wind screen wash tank?

Why not? Some have a 6.5L tank The ones wi headlamp washers - yes some mk3s had headlamp washers!

just curious cause when i open my bonnet my mates always seem to ask the same question "why such a big tank"

Simple -
So you dont have to arse about filling it up so often! 4 litres isnt a great size or weight penalty in the grand scheme of things for the benefit of not having to open the bonnet so much.

About once every 3 months for me, and thats if it's a dirty period (reminds me, must check).

Plus dont the pre-mixed bottles come in handy 4-litre sizes?

4 litres is quite small compared to most cars. My mk5's was something like 7 litres! I bet on their cars (if indeed they have cars) its very cleverly hidden in the wing or something so they dont know how big theirs truly is.

Ive only ever seen one mk3 with headlight washers, this guy who goes by the name of "roo" on forums, hes got a windsor blue G40 with absolutely every extra you can think of, leccy windows the works. His water tank IS huge

im not sure on which model(s) it was available but mk3 polos had a range of optional extras.
1) Head lamp washer
2) Heated front seat

3) Fog lamps

thats all the 1s that i no of, feel free to add some if any?!?!

electrically adjustable headlights...

and i think theres a couple other things mentioned in the owners manual that i dont think ive seen anywhere on a real polo... such as a trip counter (computer??) mounted in the clock/revcounter fascia!!
(and, of course, the diesel engine)

The mk5 polo gti has headlamp washers with the xenon lights and has a 6.5L tank, its huge !

2) Heated front seat
3) Fog lamps
4)Sunshine Roof (slides back) Apparently there is an option for these to be electric
5)Central Locking (v v v rare)
6)Electric Windows (also v v v rare)
7) tinted windows

Half colour coded bumpers (squareback and coupe only)
9)Loads of different Alloy wheels.
10)Split folding rear seats

Those are all the "toys" I can think of but theres the usual ones like; Rev counter & digital clock, cigarette lighter, internally adustable mirrors, choice of interiors

The trip counter is on your speedo - unless its really really basic spec.

It turns out the diesel engine is pants by the way. Just found some specs on the web and its got 48hp (which I new already) and 85Nm of torque @ 3500rpm (less than the 1.3 petrol) This could be wrong of course.

I think ive done ok in terms of specs on mine, my black GT's got fook all toys but my blue GTs got 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 although admittedly I had to fit 3 and 5 myself.

Wonder if there's a place where it tells me what the codes are? Anyone

my mk4 only used to fit 2 litres in the washer tank IIRC. I was forever filling it up.

the 4 litre one on my mk3 lasts ages.

I managed to get the sales brochure for my model year polo. It had pics of the "new" car as well as all the technical data youll ever need. I also found out what colour the interior of my blue GT was going to be before I went and looked at it and I was right (it was black) It had this little chart that showed what colour interior came with what colour car. The only one that didnt make sense to me was the combo of grey GT interior in a navy blue car. Madness.

ok, you HAVE (points gun) to tell me what the code/s and name/s for the navy blue non-metallic paint/s is/are.....

(it's the one that comes with the grey + blue/red dashed seat trim in a CL..)

(wait... the ciggy lighter (ahem... er... "12v socket") counts as an "optional extra" / toy??)

the diesel was one of the old skool of diesels, and i think it might have been the one that got VW diesel cars the long standing rep for being ghastly slow til the TDIs came along (...after they even fitted it - with 48hp! - to some Golf pickups in the states)

power and torque wise it seems about halfway between the 1.0 and 1.3, despite it's 1400cc+ capacity, and aiming just a little more towards the 1.0..... 48 horse, a little over 60lbft torque (from memory), and thanks to the extra weight only the slightest improvement in 0-50 and 0-60 times over the small petrol engine. top speed bizarrely reduced from that (bad gearing?).... but... quite a nice torque spread (basically flat from mid 2k's to high 3k's, and hardly drops from there to the limiter), and astounding economy for an unrefined late 80s/early 90s unit. the manual states 70mpg for the constant, non-slipstreaming 56mph... and something around 50 for 75mph! (and its amazing in-town compared to the petrol engines)

the polo of choice for the eco concious, but i bet it handled like crap
