6C Composition media update/upgrade

Hi guys,
first post here so be gentle please.
I have just ordered a new 1.0 75PS SE which is due to arrive in the next couple of weeks.
I am interested in using mirrorlink but havent asked VW for the option (nor do I fancy paying for it either!)
My questions are would it be possible to
a) Upgrade the firmware of the composition media unit in the future WITHOUT taking it to VW (and being charged an arm and a leg!) myself?
b) Is it possible to activate any features which might be turned off by default? For example Sat NAv?

Its all activated via a dealer only mechanism to VW HQ in germany - sadly no way to do it yourself.

The only way I know if to add sat nab is via a piggyback like this:

Hopefully CarPlay will be offered as a dealer fit upgrade.

I am guessing that VW use some special tool for the job then? Or is it just that they have codes that remain secret?
