Big problems! Help!

Post by nelliexo »

Hi all,

I'm a newbie so please bare with me.

Basically a few weeks ago the clutch went. Took it to a mechanic who said that all the rods needed replacing too as they had been crushed. As far as I'm aware, the rods were replaced, the cable and also he took out the steering column. Also something to do with pedal box he mentioned. All in all it cost £600.

A week after having the Polo back, it was making a noise that is only comparable to a seal (the animal) but you can only hear it on the ooutside.

Now, after about 3 or so weeks, there is a very loud whooshing/whining noise when accelerating and decelerating. When you press in the clutch it makes a noise too. First gear is really stiff, and it sounds like the whole car is rattling. The rattling noise sounds to me as if it's coming from the steering column, maybe the pedal box?

Any ideas?
Many thanks, and thanks again for your patience :) :D

Sounds like you need to take it straight back to the mechanic that did the work

Something definitely isnt right there! Could be a defective release bearing, wheel bearing, disconnected hose just for a start.

Hi Alex,

Thank you for your reply. I did enquire with a local mechanic who is part of the VW scene, and he thought it could be the gear box.

I would rather a VW specialist look at as they know the cars well. I will speak to the mechanic, just seems a bit odd that's all. The polo is a 2001 and had been perfectly sound until the clutch needed replacing. But now it seems that all that work had been done, and now it's like a chain effect. But I don't know whether that's because of the work or because of the age of the car?

Thanks again :D

I would be heavily surprised if it was the gearbox. If it was fine till changing the clutch and pedal box, it all points to something related to that.
