Is this bust?

Post by Mayhem »

Right so i took my wheels off and noticed this on my wheel spacer. looks like a crack but cant tell if its just the finish thats damaged rather than the metal itself. Only been on car for about 600miles at most. Taken off for now as not sure on safety of them. Opinions?

Looks pretty bust to me I'm afraid?

Is that a 10mm spacer, and was it on the rear of the car?

Edit: Although not at all desirable, it's the wheel bolts that hold the wheel on, not the spacer in this case, so it wasn't absolutely unsafe. But, you might have got more vibration as a result, and certainly not a long term thing to ignore as it might eventually break up.

Looks bust to me too. I'd be checking the other side for similar damage and probably throwing the lot in the bin anyway.

Im considering spacers, would like to know which ones these are to avoid. Or if anyone has any technical knowledge on damage spacers can do please advise.

I've seen that sort of damage on a 10mm hubcentric spacer bolted to the rear of a MkIV Golf.

Rear hubcentric spacers on those (and the polo V) need to be 12mm+ (my 15mm fit fine) otherwise when you tighten the bolts the end of the spacer hub hits the car wheel hub before the face of the spacer is flush with the face of the car hub, and it splits the spacer.

It's a lot harder to explain than to see, but the car rear hub is more than 10mm deep.

If that has happened to a 15mm spacer, then I'm not sure what has gone on, other than it not being the right size to fit properly over the centre of the hub.
