6R or 6C

Post by Guy »

I collected my new Polo GTI today - very nice.

I'm a bit confused about the 6R/6C classification. On the preprinted sticker in the service booklet it says :-

6C1 9TX
Polo 1.8 BMT GTI

however on the sticker inside the passenger door opening it says :-

TYP 6 R

and in the V5C I've just received it says :-

1798 cc
Type 6R

I thought the 2015 Polos were type 6C.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who knows for certain!

A 1.8 is definitely a 6c :)

All 6c seem to have 6R on the vin ect. I think it's because the underlying chassie is the same. As said above the 1.8 is only available with the 6C

I think it must be a 1.8 because it has the 6 speed manual gearbox and the GTI badging. But the engine has a TSI badge yet the 1.8 is turbocharged but not supercharged.

The car was built to an order placed in late March this year.

I'm new to VW but I'm getting the feeling that there is a lot of contradictory information floating around. I've noticed this in the manual which I think has a very strange flow of information requiring you to jump from page to page where it could have all logically been put in one place.

I guess I'd really like to be absolutely sure I have a 1.8!

So now you think the dealer cheatet you and gave you and a 6R???

1. TSI is VW's name for all engines with either turbo or supercharger...
2. The new GTI is available with both a manual and DSG gearbox where the old one was only available with the DSG gearbox
3. The type of the body it self is still called a 6R. because nothing has changed to the basic structure of the body. 6C is just the name of the faceliftet 6R.
4. I beg you to please stop the conspiracy theories before they get out of hand. The dealer has NOT cheatet you and you have got the exact car you have ordered.
And please just Google Polo 6R and Polo 6C and see pictures that you do in fact have a 6C.

No VW are not trying to commit fraud to sell you an old car. The new GTI uses a 1.8 TSI engine without a supercharger. It's based on the 2.0tsi used in the golf GTI.

Also if you have a composition media system it's a 6C.

Thanks to both of you for those clarifications. It's just the sort of expert knowledge that I was hoping to tap into as a complete VW "Newbie". I had Googled to try to find a definitive answer but without success. I hadn't appreciated that TSI can mean either Turbo or Supercharger as well as both.

I never had the slightest intention of suggesting that anything fradulent or cheating was going on from my dealership, VW, or anyone else. Let alone try to spread a conspiracy theory. Re-reading my post I'm surprised it was taken that way but I guess that is a hazard with any non face to face communication in that you only see the bare words. I've had excellent service from my local VW dealer so far and I'm confident it will continue.

This was quite a major purchase for me, and seeing 6R on the car plate and 6R on the V5C registration document was a little unsettling. A little knowledge can be worse than no knowledge at all sometimes - for example if I had never heard of the terms 6C & 6R I wouldn't have had a concern in the world. But now all has been explained I'm back on track.

Yes, I do have the composition media system and it's excellent. I posted a little practical feedback to an earlier post of mine querying maximum SD Card and USB stick capacities. I've found this forum very helpful and would like to try to give a little back even if it's only of marginal use to someone else.

TSI or TFSI if the same engine is in a Audi or Seat. is per deffinition a turbocharged engine (as the T suggests ;) )
Later on the VAG Group released their downsized 1,4 TSI/TFSI engine with both Turbo and Supercharger (Like the engine in the 6R GTI).

But some of the Audi's now have a Supercharged only engine. But still under the TFSI bagde.
Other manufactureres like Mercedes for example uses a Turbo badge for turbo models and Kompressor for their supercharged engines. :)

It's german logic... Nobody is supposed to be able to figure it out. ;) hehe

I think this was a case of where referring to cars by the factory codes on enthusiast car forums like this one can cause confusion!

I suppose for most people a Polo is a Polo, and they have no interest in whether it's a 6R or 6C.

I wonder what the 7R will look like?! :D

But the chassis is the same... ;)

It's very easy...

Polo 6R interior:

Polo 6C Interior:

Different: steeringwheel, radio, climatronic, buttons above radio, door lock switch, stalks, mirror (if you have rain/lightsensor) etc etc.
