Mines done about 4000 miles and I haven't even checked the oil level yet. If it breaks, it's their problem

Mines on 8900 miles and the oil level has hardly changed on the stick. Quite a difference from my old Golf GTi!
Think it's fine to wait for the recommended services. Modern synthetic oil is really good.

Re: Blue GT coming up 2000 miles - oil change?
I have done almost 36000 miles in mine... And the garage changes the oil when I take it in for servicing and I change it my self half way between services. So it's done twice as often as it should. So I'm on my 4th oilchange now.

Had mine done at 1,500 miles. Just to ease the mind.

You should not change the oil that early. You run the risk of the engine not running in properly if you do. Run the engine in properly (i.e. make sure it is revved throughout its range early on, don't treat it too gently) and change after 10000 miles or 1 year.
Times change - engines are not filled with mineral oil anymore that needs to be changed after 600 miles. Changing the factory-fill long life oil after only 1500 miles will have the opposite to the intended effect and possibly shorten the life of the engine and decrease performance and economy.
You should also regularly check the engine oil level yourself. If you continue to run the car on a low oil level and damage occurs VW can void your warranty citing your negligence in not performing basic checks.

Interesting viewpoint.
