Rubber Floor Mats

Post by Guy »

I'd like to get some decent quality rubber floor mats for the front footwells in my Polo GTI to go on top of the standard GTI carpet mats.

However, the VW tailored rubber mats appear to have the round clips so they might not sit very well on top of the carpet mats which have similar clips.

Halfords sell some inexpensive rubber mats which apparently can be easily cut to size and the underside is said to grip carpet well. Certainly they have good reviews on the Halfords website.

Would appreciate any suggestions!

To be honest I think you'd be best removing the carpet mats and going for the original rubber mats. They are just a direct replacement and pick op on the same mounting studs, they are pretty durable and fit properly. I can't see how you're going to get any mats to fit correctly by having one on top of another??

Original ones are less than £28ish a pair for the front, maybe cheaper on FleaBay.

These are rears, they are out of stock at the moment of fronts

Thanks - it was really the fronts I wanted. Always the way.

I'll give it a bit more thought!

Thanks again

Well, when I bought my new B5 Passat 2.8 V6 4Motion back in June 2000, first thing I did was to buy VW rubber mats and place them on top of the original mats, stayed that way until I sold it a couple of years ago, it was then that I discovered the edge of the rubber mats had been cutting into the main carpet, but the maps that were sandwiched in between were as good as new! In September 2002, when I bought my wife a new 9N Polo 1.4 16V SE, first thing I did was to buy VW rubber mats - roughly same story as Passat, but as she is shorter, she found that the rubber mats moved forward and probably only me thought that was not a good thing to happen as they ended up under the pedals, when it was traded in a few days ago the sales guy suggested that I held on to the mats as they would fit 6R C0 Polo(?) - so I did, they were in "as new" condition.

As these two cars were personal imports from Holland, they came complete with mats.

When I bought a slightly used Audi S4, I noticed that a mat was missing so asked for a set of rubber mats - and have not missed the original mats at all.

When I spec'd up my wife's new Polo, I left out mats just in case it came with them anyway - it didn't and I have again bought rubber mats - front and rear, only thing is, this time I might get brave enough to buy the proper fixings (for the rear mats) that, I think, are secured to the floorpan and not just the mat and underfelt.

I likethe idea of rubber mats to protect the carpet maps. They don't have to be a perfect fit - smaller is fine as long as they take the load from one's feet. Also it's handy if they can be removed with one pull for cleaning.

I do have some suitably sized rubber mats but they are rather prone to slip - not dangerously - but if I could find some with the little rubber spikes underneath which would grip the carpet mats better then I'd replace them.

I think the Halford tailored mats are too big - they can be cut widthwise easily enough as they have channels to guide a pair of scissors but they are too long as well and not so easily cut in that dimension.

I totally agree with you about wanting to protect the original mats, going back too many years, the proper Ford rubber mats were reversible so lasted for years and years - but weighed a ton! Luckily the current offering from VAG is a lot lighter.
