6kv tailgate electrics

Hi, i have just bought a 1999 polo estate and wondered if anyove could help with a problem ive got.
Basically all the electrics on the boot lid are tempremental and dont seem to work properly with the boot closed. The high level brake light is on constantly and the wiper crawls along the glass, however with the boot open they work fine, ive looked at the wires in the grommets and they are still in the original tape and dont look frayed. Has anyone else had this problem?

That'll be a broken earth. Wiring might be broken inside the sleeving

You might need to run a new earth from the earth point behind the passenger light into the tailgate

Well, finally got round to looking, but i couldnt understand it... is there a common ground point on the tailgate, if so, where abouts is it? Or do the grounds join together in the wiring loom?
