Auto dimming rear view mirror

Post by db12345 »

Hello Guys,

First post but have used the forum to view things in the past. I am looking to have a auto dimming interior rear view mirror installed in my 2011 Polo 6R. Do you guys know if volkswagen make an official part for the polo if so how much should I be looking to get it at? Also how easy would it be to install or how much roughly would a garage charge to install one? Thanks for your help.

I might be out on a limb here but I just could not get on with the auto dim mirror on my BGT as it seemed to overcompensate and made night time motorway overtaking very dodgy. I have fitted a clip on mirror over the standard device, no dazzle problems but peace of mind on dark motorways.

I've had cars with auto dimming rear view mirrors for 15 years, first one (2001MY Passat 4Motiion 2.8 V6) did not have an ON/OFF switch, and that I thought was crazy, for the situations Ricmondo mentions, when wife got her next car (2003MY Polo 1.4 SE), it was spec'd to come with one as by that time VW had sorted to fit them with ON/OFF switches. About 5 years later, the liquid starting leaking out of the mirror in my Passat, and by that time I knew that the later versions of that Passat were also fitted with dimming mirrors that had ON/OFF switch, so as I had to replace that leaking, now almost empty of liquid mirror, I chose to get another auto dimming one, from a later model, so now I was happy. Pan forward a few year more years and I changed my old Passat for an 2011 Audi S4, and it comes with one of these mirrors standard, again with an ON/OFF switch, forward again to last month, wife took delivery of her new Polo 1.2TSI 110 SEL and it came with an auto dimming mirror with no ON/OFF switch on the mirror! Now I thought that there was a suggestion that this auto dimming function only worked when the car lights were set to auto switching, I've tried that but I don't think that that is true.

Costs, I'd guess in the order of £200 for some of the parts, followed by a lot of wiring etc - though I could be wrong! Maybe start off by asking your local VW parts place for a price just for the mirror - if only to confirm what I've said!

Worst, ie most dangerous situations that I've found, for me, before having a switchable dimming function was in town traffic where there are probably lots of bikes around and most car with side lights, at most on, now you can't stop people being stupid, so I tend to suffer glare so that I can be more aware of these almost invisible other road users.
