Full Service History...... hmmmmmm

Post by bstardchild »

Okay so you all know how much I winge about my 1.4 CL being a bit asmatic   so it's a bit better now - not much but a noticable improvement

See when i bought it it had just had (read alledgedly just had now) a full 80K service - normally this is the first thing I do when I buy a car - front to rear filters, lube, plugs, dizzy and rotor plus new wiper blades and any other consumables I can think off....... but in view of the recent service all I did was give it an oil change (I change all my cars oil every 3000 miles - it's the only thing that keeps the moving parts apart and it's cheap so I do it frequently - I can't help but think it's a good way to prolong the lifetime of an engine........)

Anyway I never did get a copy of the bill - the guy had mislaid it and said he would send it to me but as they had stamped the book I rang em up and asked them to send a copy too me - it seems now that as the previous owner new he was gonna sell it - he asked them to do the bare minimum

Cambelt, Oil and filter, check the tyres and put a bit of screenwash in - thats it!!!!

Well I'm gratefull for the cambelt but I'm suprised a dealer would stamp the book without doing all of a service - live and learn I guess!!!

So today armed with this new information - I started doing the odd bits that weren't done - just bought air filter, plugs and fule filter as it was all my local motor factors had in stock - I'll be going back for the rest!!!!

Plugs - yuk they were horrid nearly twice the gap they should be and NOT Triple electrode but just single electrode - bit naughty that!!!

Air filter - Black as the airbox and I had to get the hoover out for all the leaves in the airbox

Dizzy and rotor - I just had a quick look what a mess horribly corroded and arc'd both of em and the rotor arm was missing a big chunk at the balance end - so I'll be doing them tommorrow........

Thought I'd just check the pollen filter - what a mess too - ended up stripping of the wipers and hovering out the whole scuttle panel area plent of jizer and a paint brush followed by a good stong spray down with water - looks much better except the pollen filter which had managed to get a huge quantity of debris in it so that got a hover out too till I can get a new one.

It improved the fan performace no end and airflow through the car is much better!!!!

I had to empty the hoover at the end and it was a newish bag when I started......

Anyway a quick run up the road confirmed that it had certainly helped pick up improved all the way through the rev range - still doesn't rev as nicely as my old MKII 1.3 Coupe S and by 4800rpm it's basically goodnight viena but at least it feels strong (ish) up to there......

Wow. It's amazing what proper maintenence can do for a car. Shame the dealer didn't do his job - stamping the book but not doing the service? That's messed up.
