There are some issues with instant fines based on registration details and no record of insurance - but I'll worry about that later.....

Biggest problem with this is it relies on the DVLC database for ownership being up to date.....

After all (putting myself in the situation of being an uninsured driver - I'm not but for arguments sake lets say I am)

I certainly wouldn't register any car I drove in my name therefore any fines through the post would be meaningless..... If you tell a purchaser that you name is John Lloyd and address 4030 Wimbledon Lane - Norwich - Norfolk - NE14 10S who is he to know that it isn't correct - he sends of his section of the log book..... Don't forget Driver licence number is optional so you don't have to produce a driving licence......

Without insurance and MOT you can't get car tax - so no incentive to get either of those then is there??????

In fact why bother passing your test at all - after all the fine will be less than the cost of learning to drive - not only that hardly gonna worry about the beaks taking away a licence you don't have......

So what has to happen to catch me is

a) an accident where I can't get out of the car and run away
b) a routine stop by the boys in blue
c) absolutely nothing else................

So this government hell bent on "safety" cameras is diverting resources away from the only people who can catch these twats - police officers (I mean real ones not community quasi uniforms that are there for show)

What a sad state of affairs....

Well I say stick the feckers in the car when they crush it - it'll make sure they never do it again

Never had an uninsured driver hit me, but I remember when I got my first car, with in a week some git had pranged it in a car park and not left details, good job I'm fairly handy with a mallet, body filler and spray paint.

Linking the insurers system to the DVLA isn't fullproof and like you illustrated bstardchild there are ways round it but its a step in the right direction.

In sweden they have a similar system to what they are proposing and less than 1% of drivers are uninsured where as here its 5%. Its really frustrating when your forking out major cash for insurance, like many of us do and other people arent paying anything and they are putting us at risk financially.

What should happen, instead of getting fines of say £150.00 they should have to repay the damaged costs which they caused and if they cant repay it they should have to do the equivalent comunity hours in work. Overall this country is too soft on criminals and it needs to change. i see the implementation of car crushing a step in the right direction.

what, like the rest of their lives (assuming they have some other job to go to (hmm?) which limits the hours they can spend on community service) if they hit mine, especially if injuries were caused in the process! I'd make sure they didn't miss an hour of it...

Maybe an eye for eye type thing.... not so much as the death penalty if they happen to kill someone (goddamn life imprisonment, because someone may end up not getting a payout on their life policy... if they have one), but if they break a little girls leg thru dangerous driving... a well trained, licensed, and fully observed police officer is given clearance to break theirs in the same way. Well, not with a car, but say with a baton. And deny access to any but the most basic painkillers. Money is money..... and time inside is fairly easy to pass away these days... but pain (and temporary disablement) is, after all, still pain.

These I fear are also the dickheads who not only speed, but speed everywhere, inappropriately and dangerously fast, who have prompted the introduction of cameras which indiscriminately catch auntie who gained a couple mph on a downhill while paying more attention to the road and ends up with a £60 fine and 3 points for doing 36 in a 30 on a wide open road when most people are still in bed.
And the secret govt plan i read about in the works copy of the sun at lunch..... some fun-less git on the cabinet is in bidding talks with electronics companies, tendering quotes for limiter gizmos to be attached to every car in the country. Except the no insurance, no mot, no tax, no license scum b*stards will also be able to quite easily get around having one fitted. So one of us may find ourselves dangerously and inconveniently locked to 60mph while trying to overtake a truck on an A-road thats staying to it's (by then strictly limited) 40mph restriction.... while they can fly down residential streets at 55 and not give a toss.

Incidentally, if that isnt just crazy speculation by the currant bun (I fear every last word is 100% true - labour is officially off the rails anyhow), they'll be fitting one to my car over my cold, dead, rotting corpse despite my current fuel saving endeavour. The reason stated above not being the only one, though it is pretty major.

Grr.

PS Guess what sticking in my bar job for two weeks after my insurance gets renewed did for my quote, when I was checking out the otherwise competitive Elephant? £125 extra - £443 up to £568!!

Because, despite for 50 weeks of the coming year I'll be a low risk Medical Technician... for just 2 of them I'm going to be an ultra high risk Bar Staff - who, naturally (as the nice girl on the phone kindly explained to me) will be pissing off punters right left and centre, who naturally enough know exactly which car I come to work in and will, through their alcoholic haze, find it and vandalise it to such a degree that the premium goes up by about a quarter of the machine's value. Though this will make little difference to me, as naturally, after work I will get absolutely hammered and drive home drunk straight into a tree. And no, it makes no difference even if I was to leave it home and bloody well cycle into work. For f***s sake...
Not only do we have security cameras plastered around the site and door/security staff swarming everywhere 24 hours a day, making the staff car park a safer place to leave it than my own driveway, but as a pump monkey I get to see the mind-hampering effects of booze all too close, all too often, to touch a drop before getting behind the wheel.... Grrr.

Luckily when phoning Endsleigh they told me, after I enquired stealthily about what difference changing my "Graduate - less than 6 months" status from last year would make, that it wouldn't alter anything to the tune of more than a few pence, and to leave it. Result! (Except their excesses are awful, and they could well be lying because "Med Tech" is half the premium of Graduate or something - but still, I can use that excuse not to tell any other insurer about the little two week transgression... in fact, only one week, cuz I'm going to be on bloody holiday for half of that fortnight!!)

But I digress... :)
