clutch cable adjuster

Post by Adriandiamond »

Hi everyone. First of all can you take a look at the attached photo and tell me if this is the clutch cable adjuster please (it's the part with the chrome threaded rod). This was fitted by the previous owner about 4 weeks ago.
Now then, if it is, should that spring be so compressed? There is no play on the top end of the clutch pedal, that's why I'm asking.
Would slackening off the nut on the threaded rod solve this problem?

Yes thats the clutch cable adjuster

Yes - the spring is there to take up slack as the clutch wears

There doesnt need to be any play in the clutch pedal - all that's important is that the bite is around 1/2 of the way up the pedal (ish)

Alex,
Not in any way questioning your expertise but to improve my understanding:
Shouldn't the lever spring decompress at least a little when the foot pedal is fully up so that the release bearing is not under continuous load?

You can slacken it off a little but in all my years working on Polos I've never seen one of these fail due to being tightened like that

Unless the pedal is pressed the release bearing isn't moving in and out anyway - only rotating

To add, looking in more detail at that photo I would slacken it a little - 10 and a 13mm spanner. They've over compressed it as its changing shape

Update.............................

I've slackened off the spring to allow a little gap between the coils, then checked whether I could still engage all gears.
I am pleased to say that all gears engaged very smoothly and I actually found the pressure needed to push in the clutch pedal was a lot easier. There is now about 10-12mm of free play on the top of the pedal.
Thanks for all the input guys. I'll keep an eye on this issue and get back with any updates.
Here is a piccy of how it is now.

That looks alot more healthy

Be sure to check the cable in around 100 miles just to make sure it hasnt loosened as this can happen when they are new
