Had a quick search and couldn't find anything apart from people ordering it with the car

Does anyone know if this feature can be added afterwards with a bit of programing?

I believe so, if you have the right model of Composition Media unit. Much more expensive than factory, of course, but doable. There was a thread on here about it!

Hopefully i'll have the right model, car is still in build stages. Stupidly i should have spec'd it on my order but didnt think much of it untill i looked into it.

How close to build is it? It may be worth phoning your dealer to see if it can be added on, if the build date is far away enough.

Meant to be with the supplier w/c 21/3 so not too far off, feels like an absolute age though!

Probably too late then unfortunately, that's only a few weeks away.

Annoyingly, I also have the older head unit, on a car that was delivered at the end of January 2016. I didn't specify the App Connect Option, however.
