1.0 timing belt

Post by piglet14 »

Over 70K now with no real history so ought to consider the old cambelt thingy.

Is the 1.0 a 'safe' engine?
At 70K what else should be done at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

Cambelt, Water pump, sparks, and fuel filter

Not from why I recall. You'll want to make sure you keep it TDC when required to prevent piston clash

Thanks Alex,

Was afraid you might say water pump, but not tensioner? or tensioner roller?

When did they start putting fuel filters on petrols? Lucky if you had a tea strainer in the tank last time I had one.

Yes tensioner too. You'll want to get the Cambelt kit and water pump to go with it. Fairly straightforward on these

VW have used fuel filters for many years. Since at least 1986

My mk2 golf has one and that was built in 87!

vorspung durk technic

Last petrol I owned was a 73 Holden HQ station wagon with 303 straight 6 & traumatic slushbox. It had a distributor, points and a condensor but no need of a fuel filter, the carb jets would pass most rust scale fragments.

Great thanks.

How do you lock the crank & cam?
Does the crank pulley have to come off?
engine mount??

Engine mount has to come off. You can lock it with a bar or get the proper tool. Quite easy to do

Crank sprocket has to be removed

Would recommend picking up a Haynes manual. Covers it in detail

Haynes don't do a Lupo manual, odd as there are plenty on the road.
I bought a Polo Haynes when we did the clutch, it all seems identical.

Struggling with our VIN No.
There is a change on the belt kits at: 6X-Y-060001
Our VIN reads: 6HZXR016841

Nothing like it, but I'd guess we are well before the change.

Did you manage to look that VIN up Alex?
I expect you have better things to do, sorry.
