USB charger

Post by Nlolotte »

Ok, so I just finished installing a USB charger in the blank grommet of my 13 plate R line polo.

I didn't get pictures because it didn't cross my mind but it's pretty straight forward.

Parts used:

Polo USB input from 6C
I used the media one by accident (it's all there was on ebay) but I found a way around it.

12V to 5V
USB runs at 12V so this is needed.

Piggy back fuse
Used to get power from the fuse box.

I began by removing my fuse panel under the steering wheel. You want to look for fuse 42 as this is where power is fused for the 12V

I inserted the piggy back fuse and added an extra 15 amp for the USB to run off.

You then want to remove the foot rest and pull the trim off that surrounds the gear stick, cup holders etc.. very carefully as this is easy to bend out of of shape. In the furthest corner its on some sort of Lego brick design and it should just pop off with gentle persuasion. Once this is back, get a mate to hold it back whilst you slide your hand up and pop the grommet out. If you don't fancy doing this you can use a knife but risk butchering your interior plastic doing so.

Now poke one of the USBs up through the hole and leave it to one side. Tape it down to stop it falling back inside. You need to run the red wire from the 12V to 5V adaptor to the piggy back fuse. You then need to run the black to a ground point. I used one of the nuts near the break pedal.

The fun bit, disassemble the Polo USB and in its place glue in the USB you poked through. I had to whittle this down to make it fit.but it does sit really flush and looks OEM just don't rush it! Once it fits and you're happy it isn't going to move, put the casing back together, pop it in and you're done. You can leave the extra USB out in the foot well to run a dash cam off or something.

So originally I ordered the USB and this cable:

This didn't work because I foolishly bought the media in USB. There are lots of different part numbers so go careful or you have to do my "hack".

Now you can charge your vape, phone, dash cam... whatever you like! Happy modding :D

This is the right USB port from the 6C: 6C0035249B - The one with a green plug.
This is only for charging - have it in my 6R.

only one little note i'd say is to lower the fuse for the 12v to 5v conveter

5A is more than ample for that
