Single click/twang when turning steering. Clues?

Post by diskelly »

Hi. First post here but from what I've read you are a clever lot. My polo 2011 1.2TDI SE has started making a click/twang noise from behind the steering wheel when the steering wheel is turned between 3/4 lock either direction. I've had the steering wheel, return slip ring and indicator stacks off the steering column, but the noise is still present. It sounds like it is coming from the steering lock, but that might just be sound travelling up the shaft from deeper into the car. Has anyone heard anything similar, and is there a solution? Thanks for all replies!

Possible causes I've read about are:
1. CV joints (not a continuous noise when on lock)
2. broken suspension springs (seem ok but my mechanic is going to check them)

Maybe completely well off the mark, but it seems like 2013(maybe) Fabia Mk2 are having trouble with substandard track rod ends, there is an official (Skoda - so maybe VW and SEAT) document out about this and the work including re-alignment should be getting done FOC. All these cars will probably be using TRW steering components and it seems that there was a faulty batch issue, contaminated grease was given as the official reason. All I've said has been gleaned from forum reading and not personal experience. So, as I said, might be well off the mark, but it is all I have to offer!

Edit:- in my experience, that noise is usually caused by a broken road spring end coupled with a "reluctant to rotate" top mounting.

Another Edit:- oh, sorry, welcome to this forum!
